Making Friends and Tending Business

Max had a meeting with the manager of the little bank in Little Timor; the branch would be closing within a week. It was not a meeting he particularly was looking forward to but things change and people have to accept and move on. His new bank was now ready in Port Auckland and accounts were already being transferred.

Dee was going with him, oh not to the bank but to shop up and down the street of Little Timor. She had her eye on some art work at Keisha’s little shop.

“I thought we needed something for this wall and Keisha has a lot of nice things Max.”

“Hmm, whatever love,” furnishing the house was not something he was interested in. He liked the way it was turning out but that was Dee’s job and she was well on her way to making a comfortable nest.

“You’re not paying attention to me are you?”

“Actually, no. I’ve got an unpleasant meeting ahead of me and artwork is not something I’m thinking about.”

“I’m sorry darling,” quick kiss on the cheek.

Max dropped her off in front of Keisha’s and drove down the street to the bank.

Dee wandered into the store and met the constable coming out. He stopped and turned not recognizing her, “I don’t believe I know you, I’m John Biebe.”

“Nice to meet you, Dee Atkinson.”

“Not trying to be nosey I know most everybody in town.”

“I’m sure you do, I’ve not been here long, have you met my partner, Max Skinner?”

“Oh yeah I have, okay now I can place you. Well enjoy you day,” John donned his sunglasses and walked back out onto the street.

“Hello Dee, how are you today,” Keisha moved up the aisle.

“Oh Hi, I’m good I’m looking for some artwork for my living room, we finally got furniture.”

“Oh well good, anything in particular?”

“I’m not very good at this, do you think you might come by sometime and have a look?”

“I’d be happy to. I close up here about 6:00 if no customers are in the store.”

“Tomorrow?”

“Um, well I have a date with the good looking constable who just left here.”

“Oh, lucky you,” Dee smiled and picked up a candle, “how about today?”

“He’s taking me to dinner but if he doesn’t mind stopping by for a minute that might work.”

“Stop by for drinks?”

“We could do that I think, thank you.”

Dee went about picking out candles and several other things passing the time, she liked Keisha and it was nice to have someone to talk to.

Max finished with his meeting and left the bank; sorry about the manager losing his job but a nice pension had been arranged for him. He left the car parked in front of the bank and walked up the street hoping to see Dee coming out of a store; he was ready for a drink and a bit of something to eat.

Dee was standing in the doorway of Keisha’s shop and saw him coming up the street, “Here comes Max, poor love.”

“Why is he a poor love?” Keisha peeked out

“He’s had to let the bank manager go, the bank is closing you know.”

“Yes I do know they’ve moved my account over to Port Auckland. I can’t just walk down the street and make a deposit anymore.”

“It’s not his doing, he has to do what he’s told, not an easy thing for him.” She waved to him.

“There you are love, I thought I might have to go door to door.” He came up and slipped his arm around Dee.

Dee introduced him to Keisha and told him about asking them for drinks.

“Sounds like a wonderful idea, and speaking of drinks I could use one and a bit of tucker, I believe is the phrase,” he smiled at Keisha.

“Try the Inn at the bottom of the street; they put on a good luncheon.” Keisha suggested.

“Thanks, is all this yours?” he looked at the bags in Dee’s hands.

“I’m afraid it is darling, you left me in a store all by myself. Tonight about 6:30 will that be okay?”

“Yes, we’ll see you then and thank you Dee.”

Once out on the street, “who’s we?”

“Keisha and the constable, John Biebe.”

“Ah well then it’s always a good idea to be in with the local law enforcement.” Max gave her a squeeze and relieved her of the bags she was carrying.
