A New Start for Cara
Cara had been living with Kim for four months now. She’d tried to find a job in Coffs but hadn’t had any luck so far. Kim was supporting her and Kimberly and that didn’t sit well with her although he had no problem with it. Living in the same flat had given her a different take on him and she had to admit she liked him. His attempts at trying to get her into his bedroom however had failed. She wasn’t ready for that yet especially with him, he had to build up a little more trust in her first.
Walking down the main street she crossed over and went into Nonnie’s.
“Hi there,” Nonnie came out from behind the counter. “I’m Nonnie Scott, I don’t think I’ve seen you before.”
“No, my first time in here, I’m Cara Williams.”
“Are you looking for something or just looking?”
“Oh, just looking…I’m unemployed right now…not the time to be buying.”
“What kind of work do you do?”
“Bookkeeping mostly…”
“Have you ever worked retail?”
“A long time ago.”
“Know anything about antiques?”
“Nothing,” she smiled.
“Good…want a job? I’m serious I need somebody so I don’t have to be here all the time and I do need somebody to straighten out my books.”
“Really you’re offering me a job?”
“Yes…are you accepting?”
“Well…yes thank you Miss Scott.”
“I’m Nonnie not Miss Scott. Start anytime I’m not very businesslike I know but somehow I get by. Come on back and we’ll get the necessaries out of the way.”
Cara left the shop amazed at her good fortune. The pay wasn’t much but it was something and if she sold anything she’d get a bonus. She went back to the flat above Barrett’s feeling pretty good about herself.
Kim came up the stairs to the flat, “Hi, thought you’d gone out I saw you walking down the street.”
“I did, I went to Nonnie’s and got a job.”
“Nonnie’s…Cara you could have worked downstairs how many times did I tell you that you had a job if you wanted it?”
“I wanted to get one on my own, Kim and I did. I start tomorrow At least I can pay for Kimberly’s school now.”
“Wait a minute, you don’t pay for anything here or for schools for Kimberly. You can do what you want with your money that you make but I’m still supporting you and our baby.”
“Our baby…”
“That’s what I said…she is ours. Have you had lunch?”
“No.”
“Let’s go to Andy’s and lunch will be on you, you can pay me back,” he smiled. “I’m happy for you Cara I really am.”
“Thanks, Kim and I will pay you back.”
“Deal,” He took her arm and they left the flat. As they walked down the street, “You know Cara I’m proud of you. You’ve had a rough go and I know part of it was my fault. I’m trying to make it up to you as best I can. I’m trying to be responsible.”
“You’re doing a good job of it too.”
Kim smiled, “Do you think so? “
