A Watchful Eye

Molly got off work at 4:30 and pulled out of Andy’s parking lot onto Glen Road, unaware she was being watched she drove up to the Glen Kindy and picked up Nic.

Barth drove past the kindy and turned around and waited until she came out. He followed her down Glen Road to the motorway and blended in with the traffic coming from Coffs toward Nana Glen. He slowed when she pulled into a long dirt driveway but had to move on when a horn honked behind him. Farther down the road he turned around and drove slowly back by the driveway, no name on the fencing or anything but he was sure he could find it again if he had to.

Now he had something for Rosemary Fitzgerald and she’d better have something for him, he grinned and sped toward Coffs.

Dom was already at home, he’d gotten off work at the garage early to meet with the solicitor in Coffs who would be handling the custody case for him. He walked out on the front porch when Molly drove up and parked.

“Hey, Molly,” he stepped off the porch and went to get Nic out of the car seat. “How ya doin’ Nic?”

Dom was spending as much time as he could with Nic trying to establish some sort of relationship with the boy. He still hadn’t told him he was his father, Nic called him Dom.

Molly noticed Dom’s efforts, she still thought of Nic as her son and it bothered her a great deal that she was probably going to lose him. “Did you go see the solicitor?”

“Yeah I did, I’ll uh tell you about it later, a lot of paperwork has to be done.” He tossed a ball back to Nic.

“Did she say anything about the child protective people?”

“Um yeah, the court will appoint someone but if he’s not in any danger and is being taken care of then there shouldn’t be a problem with you looking after him. Mainly the guardian is there to look after the child’s interest in court.”

She took a breath, “Okay well I’m going to change and um see about dinner.” She took a bag from Andy’s off the back seat of her car. “I’m cheating,” she smiled and went into the house.

Dom looked after her for a moment, he really liked her and it was kind of an awkward situation with her staying with him. He was wanting to be dating her but there was Nic in the house too and he wanted to keep everything on the up and up. “Okay, okay…” he tossed the ball back to the boy. The old stray dog woke up and became interested in the ball and Dom let Nic play with the dog and he found a seat on the front porch where he could watch him.
