Moving Across the Divide
"Well, I just thought that…you might want more room um Kimberly is getting bigger and you know this flat was only designed for one person…really."
Cara considered what he was asking it meant a commitment no matter how you looked at it. There was no way she could afford to live on her own with what she made down at Nonnie’s and it was true what he said about the flat, Kimberly’s toys alone took up half the living space in the front room.
"There are a lot of properties around that you might want to look at." He was trying to go slow here with her, he never knew whether she would turn on him or not.
"It’s so convenient here…" she glanced at him.
"Oh yes it’s very convenient…except for space. I suppose one could knock out a wall or two and expand into the storage floor…but think of a garden for Kimberly to play in."
"She has the park…"
"Down the street."
"I’m getting deeper and deeper with you.’ She finally admitted.
"I don’t mind," he smiled, "in fact I encourage it"
She smiled a little, "you do don’t you. Kim I’ve had to rethink my opinion of you…you know how I disliked you when we met again in Coffs. But then I had my surgery and the way you stepped in and took full responsibility for Kimberly…the daughter you hardly recognized as yours and then took me in well I…you’ve come a long way."
"But I’m still not there is that it?"
"I didn’t say that. I just wanted you to know that I appreciate what you’ve done and done well. I’m very aware of…you."
"Ah…aware as in I exist or…?"
"I’m aware of you as a man. We’ve been living together in this flat for nearly a year and I’ve gotten to know you…I think I actually like you. I know it’s not been easy for you with me here sleeping in Kimberly’s room. At first it was medical you know..it was an excuse to sleep alone. Then I got to the point where I wanted to know who you were and I have."
He rose from his chair and walked over to her, where she was folding Kimberly’s laundry. "If I understand what you’re saying…you’re ready to move across the hall…is that…oh Cara you don’t know how …this is wonderful," he took a stack of things from her hands and took her in his arms. "I’ve gotten to know you too and I know what an ass I was. I want to make it up to you…make life good for you and Kimberly…our daughter." He kissed her and she let him returning the kiss to him.
"We’ve done everything backward haven’t we but I’m glad we’re together."
"So am I now I want you to seriously look for a house, money is not a problem if the property is right for us.
"Us…I fought it for so long…I like the sound of that now."
