Amanda & Lucy Make a Cake
Lucy took her cake layers out of the oven and placed them on a rack to cool. The bakery was closed but she kept an eye out for Amanda who was coming by to keep her company. A knock on the side door, she removed her apron and unlocked the door.
“Hey Amanda,” she gave her a hug, “Come on in.”
“Smells good in here Lucy if I worked here I’d be as big as a house.”
“No you wouldn’t, it would put you off sweets, how about a cup of tea?”
“Sounds marv, oh you’ve got it baked already.”
“Yeah, letting it cool down then the hard part comes, so how’s things?”
“Great, Johnny’s been working in my school house getting some carpentry work done on the two front rooms. I’m going to open a day care in those two rooms. With all the babies popping up around the neighborhood I thought it might be a good thing to do.”
“I thought you were going to open a school?”
“I will eventually, maybe hire a teacher, I’m looking right now for infant caretakers.”
“Did you get the boys off?”
“I dropped Johnny off at Millie’s there was a big long limo out front so I guess they’re well on their way to drunkenness.”
Lucy laughed, “I don’t see it myself, why guys think it’s fun to get drunk and tomorrow Andy has to be sober and upright, he’s gonna feel like roadkill.”
“I know,” Amanda chuckled, “Johnny will too, I just hope he doesn’t fall down and hurt his ankle, it’s healed but you know it’s still weak. As long as he makes it home I’m okay with their going out.”
“Yeah me too, Andy doesn’t do this very often so I expect he’ll be totally pissed when he gets home.”
“He has stairs to go up Lucy.” Amanda remembering Johnny’s fall.
“If I can’t get him up the stairs I’ll bed him down here in the kitchen, clear off one of those benches back there with the boxes stacked on top.”
“I’m so happy for you Lucy, getting married and all I know how much you want this.”
“Thanks Amanda, I do, I want us to be married because I want his children. When are you and Johnny going to get serious?”
“We’re already serious but marriage has not been mentioned. I know him I think he wants to get himself established, money in the bank that sort of thing, maybe even a different job he doesn’t want to work out at McGee’s forever. If it were up to me we’d be standing with you and Andy tomorrow. Johnny is stubborn but I love him anyway.”
“I know, they get to you. I’ve loved Andy since the first time we dated, it took him awhile though. He always said he’d never get married.”
“Why I wonder?”
“His parents divorced when he was young, he had a hard time of it growing up. Nothing has ever been easy for him, he’s worked since he was a kid.”
“He’s a sweet guy.”
Lucy smiled, “Yeah, he sure is. Want to help me color the frosting?”
“Sure why not, this will be fun.” Amanda smiled and dusted her hands.
