Come Home Travis
Travis thought he knew what was coming but when it hit it about knocked him down. Jan wanted a divorce. He’d tried to talk to her, time and time again, he’d talked to her doctor at length and decided he was a dick probably on Jan’s payroll. Oh yeah, she had one, she told him she’d cancelled moving her business to Coffs. When he was in the apartment she retreated to the bedroom. He spent more and more time on his boat. He hired a crew to get it ready, he had no idea where he was going.
It was a visit from his father that turned him around.
Bill McGee climbed aboard the boat and had a tour, “It’s nice Travis, really nice.” He went down to the bedroom, “You living on here now?” he’d noticed Travis’ clothes and toiletries.
“Yeah pretty much.”
“I’m sorry son it’s come to this, I really liked Jan and thought she’d settled down at the station.”
“Had us all fooled. She never settled, said she tried and wasn’t cut out for that kind of life. I ain’t cut out to mingle around with her posh friends. I don’t mind it once in awhile but you know that’s not where I’m from and it sure as hell ain’t where I’m going.”
“Where are you going, Kyle says you’re getting this boat ready to go?”
“Yeah, I am and I don’t know…just sail away... who the fuck cares?”
“Well now I do for starters and so does your
mum, not to mention a certain eleven year old boy who thinks the sun rises and
sets in you, and who you ain’t talked to since you come to Sydney. Why don’t you
come home, you ain’t doing nothing but drinking and wasting here.”
“I’ve got to sort this out Dad, fuck my whole world has just crashed, I’m too old to go running home.”
“You are never too old to come home when you’re hurtin’. You got people, lawyers and such to sort this out, be thankful you do and come home. Hell, I might sail home with ya, what do you say Travis?”
