Cup of Tea and an Ice Bag
Miss Peeg sat in her chair, feet propped up on her ottoman and an ice bag on her head. She was ever so distressed over how the trip to Coffs had gone down. Carefully she brought her tea cup to her mouth. She hadn’t got to touch the body to see if it was warm or cold as Mr. Grant had taken care of the identification. They had been damned lucky to get out of there before someone else came in.
There was something bothering her but she couldn’t think what it was, she sipped her tea. Poor Mr. Penworth…ah the candlestick…oh dear! She’d been bashed in the head with the candlestick and she had bled from the bashing in and therefore her blood would be on the candlestick.
“Oh, oh,” she said aloud, nowadays of course there was DNA testing, was there any way possible it might be traced back to her? She set her teacup back into its saucer and got up still holding the ice bag on her lump and found her phone.
“Mr. Roberts, there was something else I thought you should be aware of.”
“Yeah Miss Peeg?”
“It’s the candlestick that did the head bashing, I’m afraid my blood is most likely still on it, I didn’t think of course to pick it up did I?’ And when the police investigate they will find it and it won’t be Mr. Penworth’s blood.”
Richie ran his hand over his face, “They won’t know who’s blood it is Miss Peeg, you didn’t touch anything else did you?”
“The bell on the counter and um that was all but Mr. Grant did open the door, both sides I’m afraid.”
“Have you ever been fingerprinted?”
“Oh yes sir, many times.”
“In this country?”
“No, not in Australia but in most other countries, I was in government service.”
“Well don’t worry about it Miss Peeg, if something comes up we’ll deal with it then, how’s your headache?”
“Coming along nicely Mr. Roberts, I was just having a cup of tea and an ice bag.”
“An ice bag,” he chuckled, “take it easy Miss Peeg and I’ll see ya tomorrow.”
“Yes sir, in the morning.” She closed her phone. It was probably too late to go back for the candlestick, cops would be all over the place by now.
