Dinner at Winnie’s
Miss Peeg was having a visitor for dinner. It was her first dinner in her new cottage and she couldn’t think of anyone she’d rather share it with than Michael Stanley.
It had been ages since she’d cooked but she remembered she used to do a nice roast chicken with rosemary; a couple of vegetables on the side and that would be dinner. She’d bought rolls and a nice cake from Lucy’s for afters. She set her table with her new china and silverware quite excited to use her new things. A few flowers from her garden in a nice crystal vase and she stepped back to admire. Of course if the food was no good it didn’t matter what the table looked like. Once again she peered into the oven.
It was Michaels first visit to Winnie’s new abode and he stopped in the front garden to admire the flowers and had a look over the quaint little cottage, smiling he knocked on her door.
“Winnie I am impressed this is lovely.”
“Hello Michael do come inside,” She stepped back and received a brief kiss on her cheek.
“I didn’t know so I brought one of each, red and white wine.”
“How wonderful, we’ll have the white with dinner, its chicken I hope.”
“It smells awfully nice. Ah now this is the Winnie I know,” he had a look around her lounge room. “No fru fru for you.”
“Exactly right,” she beamed.
“You’ve done a good job here, I like this.” He stepped over to her fireplace, “this painting?”
“Yes, it is one of the few things I have that’s worth anything. It’s hung in some rather dreary places during its life with me but it has always brought me joy.”
“I’ve collected nothing; if I died tomorrow there wouldn’t be a trace of me left.”
“Nonsense you have two children and two grandchildren.”
“Three children, Gerry is coming for a visit.”
“Sorry I’d almost forgotten him, he’s here in Australia now?”
“Yes in Perth, he’s got a fortnight leave and will be here on Sunday. I suppose you’ve heard about Toni?”
“Sarah McGee told me.”
“Gena called me while Travis was in Virginia, I can’t say I’m surprised Winnie although I do hate it for Richie. I haven’t talked to him but I intend to and my son Jude and his family are considering coming next summer.”
“Such a lot of family news Michael.”
“Sorry didn’t mean to bore you with it.”
“Not at all, especially as I have met some of your family. Now I must put dinner on the table, would you do the honors with the wine?”
After their meal they took a glass of wine out onto her patio and sat down.
“Winnie, have I told you what a delightful companion you are?”
“Not tonight Michael but the feeling is mutual.”
