Girl Talk
Jean waited for Nell to come by after work, it was now 9:30 and she was pacing back in forth in her unit in Coffs. She’d already opened the bottle of wine had had a sip or two. She had to talk to somebody and Nell was the only friend she’d made since moving to Coffs.
Nell knocked on the door, “Sorry Jean, I had to wait to give a girl a lift,” a quick hug.
“That’s okay come in, like some wine?”
“Oh sure, love it…so what’s going on you sounded pretty well upset on the phone?”
“My life is turned upside down Nell and I don’t know what to do. It’s all happened too fast.”
“Oh tell me Jean.” Nell sat down with her glass.
“I met Travis McGee Saturday and he just swept me off my feet, I spent Saturday night with him on his yacht out cruising around, he brought me back on Sunday and it’s like we’re in love already. Nell, he’s bought a house on the beach for me to live in.”
“WHAT?”
“I’m serious, he’s got this woman as a security person to drive me to work and back. He wants her to live in the house with me…I just…my head is spinning.”
“Jean you do know the week before Toni Roberts was living with him or I should say at his farm in the guest house, that’s the truth Jimmy told me.”
“I know about that he told me. She never loved him though and went back to her husband. What am I going to do?”
“What a dilemma you have this millionaire boyfriend who buys you a house on the beach and you want to know what to do?”
“It’s not funny…it just concerns me a little…too much too fast.”
“Do you love him?”
Jean hesitated, “I do when I’m with him, he’s oh gosh easy to love. It’s just that I have this feeling that I need to back away a little you know. He’s all tied up in getting his divorce filed and then we’d have to wait a year before anything, you know like marriage.”
“Marriage, good heavens Jean you only just met him.”
“See what I mean. Then on the other hand, I like him as a person. He’s very honest and upfront, he doesn’t hold anything back. I just don’t like this security thing and I’m not sure about the house, it’s lovely but I have a feeling he’s trying to control me. Put me in a cage or something.”
“Have you told him this, you should be as honest and upfront as he is.”
“I tried, I told him I didn’t like being a kept woman. He thinks it’s okay, doesn’t want me to work at Barrett’s. Wants to give me money stuff like that.”
“It’s not all about what he wants Jean. I think you’re right to want to back away a little. Wow, you and Travis McGee, wow.”
“I’m a little afraid if I do back off, I’ll lose him and I don’t think I really want to do that, lose him I mean.”
“Sounds to me like you two need to have a heart to heart talk.”
“I think we do.”
