In Care Of Travis
It wasn’t long before Jean Robinson found out what being taken care of by Travis McGee was all about. Monday morning when she exited the elevator in her building she was met by a car and driver. The driver was more than just somebody to drive her to work, she was now attached to Jean for security purposes. She was a little taken aback and not at all sure she liked this.
“My name is Mel Davies,” said the tall no-nonsense looking woman. “Mr. McGee has asked me to look after you Miss Robinson.
“Look after me, I’m not sure I know what you mean.”
“Just a security precaution, besides you probably need somebody to run errands, pick up things for you that kind of thing. I can also protect you from the paparazzi, word is already out you were spotted with Mr. McGee.”
Jean stared at her wide eyed, Travis had warned her about that. “I was…going to work.”
“Yes ma’am and I’m to drive you there and pick you up, are you ready to go?”
Jean walked out of the building and stopped, on the street was a black SUV with darkened windows, she turned to Mel, “This?”
“That’s it, hurry now before somebody sees you,” she opened the back door and Jean got in.
Was this what her life was going to be like? She pulled out her phone and called Travis.
“I told you your life was going to change Jean, you said you could handle it.”
“I know but I didn’t expect this, I almost feel frightened Travis, why do I need protection?”
“Because I worry about you Jean, I can’t be there with you and I don’t want you hassled by paps or anybody else. Jan’s trying to be reasonable about the divorce but the lawyers she’s hired wouldn’t be above looking for dirt on me. I don’t want them to find any and I don’t want your name brought into it honey, I hope you understand and Mel is top notch, Kyle knows her. She’ll be your friend and look after you until I can. We’re looking at a year here Jean, a year.”
“But…this is going to attract as much attention as anything Travis, in The Glen…I don’t need this.”
“You don’t live in The Glen, Coffs is different. I may find you a different unit, that building you live in is too public and I just might want to come and see you.”
“Now wait a minute here, I was lucky to find that unit it was the only one I could afford.”
“You don’t worry about that, I’ve got somebody looking for a place on the beach I’ll let you know in time to pack your toothbrush. Jean…it’s Monday morning and I love you.”
Jean lay her head back on the seat, “I love you on Monday too.” A year seemed like an awfully long time. She sighed and looked out of the window as they pulled up in front of Barrett’s.
