Johnny’s Nurse

Johnny was vaguely aware of being carried from the ambulance up the stairs in a lift by two fairly large fellows, there was some confusion regarding narrow steps and then blissful sleep. He woke in a wide bed surrounded by fluffy pillows and his right foot supported by two more pillows. He had no idea where he was. He pulled himself up to a sitting position and looked around the neat rather feminine room. There was a jug of water by his bed so he poured a glass and leaned back on the headboard. It was then he became aware he was dressed only in his boxers.

Amanda having gotten Johnny settled in her room went down the steps and next door to let her Auntie know she was home and that she had put Johnny in her room.

Miss Peeg was still getting her office in order after the flood of water. "Amanda you’re back and how is the young man?" She put down her papers and gave her niece a hug.

"He’s a bit wobbly Auntie…I’ve put him in my room…he can’t go up and down stairs for awhile and there is no bath on his floor. He’s sleeping right now."

Winnie Peeg sat down, "But Amanda where are you to sleep?"

"I’ll sleep in his room," she said brightly, "I don’t see a problem do you?"

Johnny searched around the bed for a shirt and finding nothing resigned himself to his nakedness. He saw crutches against a wall and closed his eyes. When he opened them some time later it was to see Amanda by his bedside, she reached out and took his hand.

"Can I get you anything?" she asked

His throat felt constricted, "A shirt," he croaked

"I’ve brought your clothes down but unfortunately they all needed the laundry. There’s only this singlet," Amanda moved to the window seat and brought him the undershirt. "You’re in my room if you’re wondering…it seemed the best thing to do."

Johnny began shaking his head, "you shouldn’t be doing this Amanda…I’m putting you out of your bed…your room."

"I want to Johnny; I’d hate to think if this had happened to me that someone wouldn’t care enough to take care of me, besides I can sleep in your bed until you’re able to go up and down steps and in the meantime I’m your nurse," she smiled, "so if there is anything you need let me know."

Johnny squeezed her hand and closed his eyes.
