Miss Peeg Gets a Reprieve

Miss Peeg walked into Millie’s and checked her message cubby hole and then went up the stairs to her room. It was nearly midnight and she was exhausted. The day’s events wearing heavily upon her. After Sheriff Biebe had come and told her the bullet in the man’s neck was not from Mr. Roberts gun she had been stunned. “Are you quite positive?” she’d asked. She could tell the Sheriff was as relieved as she was to hear the news.

She had been allowed to go home with Amanda and Johnny but first she went up to see Mr. and Mrs. Roberts to let them know. Mr. Roberts had been relieved but he was also confused, he’d heard two shots but assumed one was from his gun and one from the hit man’s gun. He’d also told her the office was closed until Monday.

Miss Peeg took a long soaking bath and prepared to go to bed. She planned to sleep in the next day. Before she turned in she checked her messages she’d picked up downstairs. One from Henry Jessup, one from Sarah McGee. She would catch up with them later her nice soft bed was calling.

She lay back on her pillow and tried to empty her mind. Twenty minutes later she was still staring at the ceiling. “Winifred Peeg you are too old to be running about the countryside with a gun in your purse, you silly old cow,” she said aloud. She sighed heavily and closed her eyes.
