Miss Peeg’s Dinner Date
Miss Peeg was finishing up her work and happened to look out of the window of her office to see Mr. Jessup on his way across the street; there was nowhere for her to go so she sat and waited. He really was a dear man, but after what Sarah McGee had told her about the jewelry he wanted to bestow on her, she had been avoiding him.
“Good afternoon Miss Peeg, I hope you are well,” he said in his soft, mild mannered voice.
“I’m quite well, Mr. Jessup. And you?”
“Very well, thank you. I wanted to let you know the latest puzzle books are in; I know you like a crossword.”
“How very kind of you.”
“I, uh, noticed your sister, Mrs. Rammond, has departed?”
“Yes, Amanda took her to the airport last evening.”
“I hope she enjoyed her visit. Now, I was wondering about dinner?”
“Dinner, Mr. Jessup?”
“Yes Miss Peeg, if you might join me for dinner tonight? Since we both dine in the same restaurant it seems a shame not to share a table.”
“Um…well…of course Mr. Jessup, I shall be delighted to.” Miss Peeg would be ever so glad when her cottage would be ready for occupancy; she found a smile and put it on.
“That’s wonderful! Say, about 6:30 then? I’ll be looking forward to it.”
Miss Peeg ran a hand over her face as he left the office; what had she done?
