Of Miss Peeg and Canaries
Miss Peeg’s phone began to ring before she closed the door to her room at Millie's.
“Hello Winnie, I just wanted to make sure you got home all right.”
“Yes Michael, I’ve just come in, I’m sorry about not being able to accept your offer but as I came with Mr. Jessup…”
“I quite understand Winnie, no need to apologize. If you’re free tomorrow afternoon I’d like to take you to dinner.”
“Oh, that would be very nice Michael, I would love to where shall I meet you?”
“Oh no, this time I’m picking you up say about 6:00?”
“Yes and thank you I’m looking forward to dinner with you.”
“Good, that’s settled then…have a good night Winnie.”
“You too Michael, until tomorrow then, good night.”
She moved over to the vanity and began taking the pins out of her hair catching her reflection in the mirror, “wipe that smile off your face Winnie Peeg the feathers are beginning to show between your teeth.”
She’d liked him from the first time she’d met him at his daughter’s wedding. He was a fine man, well read, well educated and they shared a background in foreign service. She couldn’t have placed an order for the ideal companion and come up with a better example. She was quite pleased with the day as she got ready for bed, quite pleased.
