Second Sight
There it was again, a horrible noise, he turned his head it was the damn phone, who would be calling in the middle of the night? Another blink, blink of his eyes told him it wasn’t night but early morning. It rang again and he picked it up.
Clearing his throat, “yeah?”
“Richie…this is Travis I just wanted to make sure she got home.”
“Um, yeah she’s here…still asleep.”
“Okay, that was it…” he rang off.
Now that he was somewhat conscious he looked over at Toni, she was still in her clothes but sometime in the night he’d got up and gone to the bathroom and left his on the floor. He eased himself out of the bed and found a pair of shorts in the drawer, one of the few things of his left in this bedroom. He felt like he was moving under water, water that’s what he needed. He went downstairs and got a bottle of water and came back in the bedroom.
Toni was trying very hard not to be awake. It hurt to open her eyes, maybe if she lay very still. Richie sat back down on the bed and Toni moaned.
“Are you awake?” he asked.
She mumbled
“Toni?”
“OoOhhh uuugh.” She tried to set up and the room went spinning, “sick.”
“Are you going to be sick?”
“Am sick…oh I am.” She got up and crashed into the wall, Richie was up at her side guiding her to the bathroom, He held her forehead while she threw up in the toilet.
“That’s it get it all out,” he reached over and took a washcloth from the cute little basket she kept nearby and wet it in the sink. He pressed it to her forehead. She took the washcloth and covered her face with it and sat back leaning against the vanity.
“I’ve never felt so bad in my life,” she managed.
“You’ve got a hangover honey.”
“Why do they call it that cause you hang over a toilet?”
Richie smiled, “ could be, want some water?”
“Yes.”
He went in the bedroom and got his bottle of water and handed it to her sitting down on the bathroom floor opposite her. “Take little sips.”
“You don’t feel bad?”
“Yeah, but I’m a guy and I’m bigger than you are, it’s spread over a larger area.”
“I don’t remember going to bed.”
“What do you remember?”
“Sitting in the kitchen talking with you.”
“Do you remember what we talked about?”
“Some of it,” she pulled the cloth down and met his eyes. “I remember.”
“I’m not gonna keep sayin’ I’m sorry Toni.”
“I don’t want you to…none of that matters anymore…you’re here with me, and you love me.”
“Yes I do love you, I never stopped.”
She ran the cloth over her face again, “neither did I.” she looked down at her crumpled clothes, “I slept in my clothes.”
“I woulda undressed you but I passed out.”
His eyes had never left hers, “do you think you might could do that now and put me in the shower, I gotta feel better.”
“I think I could do that…Toni…I love you honey.”
He pulled her to her feet, undressed her and turned the shower on, stepping out of his shorts he pulled her in with him and bathed her. She leaned against him in the shower and put her arms around his neck.
“Do you feel up for this?” he asked in her wet ear.
“That’s why I have to feel better Richie…let’s go back to bed…for the day.”
“I like your thinkin’ kid.”
