Something To Think About
Toni toyed with her cup of coffee while Richie ate his breakfast and read The Glen Times.
“You aren’t eating?” he asked from behind his paper.
“I don’t seem to have much of an appetite Richie, I’m trying my best to just go along as if nothing is the matter and I can’t get there.”
Richie put the paper down, “I lived years of my life like this Toni you can’t let it dominate your life, you just go on doing what you do.”
“Well I haven’t lived years like this; I’m finding it hard to even let you go out of the house, out of my sight.”
“Are you working today?” he asked finishing the last of his coffee.
“Yes I have a 10:00. Do you want some more coffee or toast or something?”
“No babe, I gotta go to the office. I’m glad you’re working give you something to think about besides me.”
“You’re never out of my thoughts Richie I just don’t like the ones I’m having right now.” Every since Richie told her about the contract on his life she had been in a state; tears never far from the surface.
He stopped and kissed her mouth, “you have a good day Toni and I’ll see you tonight.”
“Richie,” she called out stopping him in the hallway, “you be careful today.”
He smiled and picked up his briefcase and jacket and went out making sure the door was locked before getting into his vehicle and driving to work.
Toni sat at the table pushing toast crumbs around with her finger she was so worried about him she couldn’t concentrate on anything. Thoughts of calling in and seeing if one of the other girls could take her 10:00 kept coming into her troubled mind. No that wouldn’t do Richie was right she needed to work.
It was about 9:15 when she emerged showered and dressed for the day, locking the house door she got in her car and turned in the driveway to head out for work. That’s when she noticed the satellite TV van at the bottom of the drive. He was blocking her exit and she tooted her horn. The closer she got she noticed there was no one in the driver’s seat. Pissed off now she opened her car door and started toward the truck.
It happened so fast a smothering cloth over her mouth and nose she couldn’t breathe, she couldn’t breathe…
The alarm on her car beeped and beeped and beeped.
