Treats, Talk and Laughter

The paint fumes had dissipated and Lee had cleaned the bedroom until you could eat off the floor if you so desired. The nursery furniture had arrived and been put together by Bill and Travis McGee. Toni was finally allowed back in the master bedroom.

Travis stood with her in the doorway to the nursery for a moment and pulled the rocking chair over for her to sit in. “Well what do you think?”

Toni couldn’t talk she wanted to cry, “Travis…”

Travis went down on a knee by her chair, “You don’t like it?”

“It’s beautiful, I love the color and the wallpaper…everything. Oh I want to get up and put out all his things, make up the crib…Cole’s room.” She squeezed Travis’s hand.

“There’s plenty of time for that, couple of months yet. Mum’s coming up this afternoon to see it she can place things for you. Do you like this rug?” Travis grinned he’d picked it out it looked like a little village with roads and train tracks winding all over it.

Toni smiled, “It’s cute, Travis I can just see him down there with his trucks and cars.”

Lee came to the door and very quietly announced they had a visitor. Travis went to the foyer, “Lucy how are you honey?”

“Fat,” she smiled, “I came to see how Toni’s doing and brought some biscuits and little tarts.”

“She’ll like that, come on back she’s in the nursery we just got it put together…her first glimpse of it.” Travis led her back to the nursery and gave them a little wave before he left.

“Hi Toni,” Lucy went over and hugged her.

“Lucy, oh how good to see you, how are you doing?”

“I’m okay, it’s just my feet…see…” her feet and ankles were badly swollen, “I’m down to one pair of sandals I can wear.”

“Oh poor thing, at least you can walk about. I’ve never been so bored in my life and everyone is trying to keep me busy with things but you know…I can’t get in the car and take off on my own…I’m stuck.”

“I’m forbidden to work…” she grinned, “but I get an hour in each morning after Andy goes in…I don’t tell him though. It’s this heat and staying in the bakery around the ovens makes it even worse, I don’t think I ever want to be pregnant in the summer again.”

“Did you plan it, Lucy?”

“No we just left it to nature you know.”

“We didn’t either; in fact except for one time…the first time we used something but anyway…we both wanted a baby. Oh we picked a name…Cole.”

“That’s a great name we haven’t decided yet because we don’t know what it’s going to be. I wanted to be surprised but Andy would like to know…he’s going to get the surprise.” She chuckled. “I noticed the butcher shop has a roof now.”

“Good, I’m afraid I pulled Bill off that job to finish up the nursery…probably put him behind.”

“It’s lovely…I’m waiting on the decorators to finish ours up, going with all bright primary colors. I ordered everything through Barrett’s. Oh did you know Kim Barrett has Cara living with him now…oh yeah, their cleaning lady told me they don’t share a bedroom but you know Kim it won’t be long.”

“I thought she was recovering from some kind of heart surgery?”

“She is but I see her walking down the street, she looks good. And…Jean was in…you know her?”

“Yes…I do.” Toni knew Jean, sometime lay for Richie and a week of Travis.

Lucy grinned, “Well she said Kim has stopped harassing her so his attention is elsewhere…probably Cara.”

“Hmm, who’s she going with now?”

“Jean? Still with March, God he is a handsome guy she’d do well to stay with him.”

“Why because he’s a good looker?”

“No, he’s got money, he’s got a place on the beach, he’s good looking and no wife.”

“Ha, ha, ha,” Toni laughed, “What else would you need eh?” Toni turned hearing the familiar sound of the tea trolley. “I have meals on wheels here…oh look thanks Tomalee. Lucy you brought lemon tarts!”

Lucy smiled, “I thought you might like that.”

“You need anything else?”

“No Tomalee this looks delicious…mmm tomato sandwiches…pull up a chair Lucy.”

Lucy had sat down in the comfortable chair for two in the nursery, “Oh dear…Toni I can’t get up.” She scooted and pushed and couldn’t get out of the cushions.

Toni started to giggle and Lucy started to giggle, “Oh we’re a fine pair neither one of us can get up,” Toni reached for the radio she had in her pocket and called Kyle to come and get them out of the nursery and back into the bedroom.
