Trouble Coming
“Hmm,” he said over the morning paper handing it across the table to his bride. “Hmm,” he said again pushing his chair back and fingering his mustache. Should he mention it, draw her attention or wait, if one waited she might not even see it for the ads for ladies unmentionables or some such.
“Bess, page two column two you may as well take a look.”
“Page two you say, column two…The Glen Times reports that…oh, oh noooo.”
He watched as her eyes widened larger and larger, might they pop out altogether?
“A fine kettle of fish I must say,” he fingered his mustache again.
She peered over the paper, “that’s my sister they’re talking about, how dare they say such things, she would never do such a thing!”
“Hmm, scandalous affair I must say.” Col. Rammond brushed the toast crumbs from his tie and stood up. “Well what do you propose to do about it?”
“Do? I shall call Amanda at once and get to the bottom of this, I wonder why she hasn’t called and told me of this, this, oh dear. I shall call at once,” she unfolded her tall frame from the little breakfast nook in her kitchen and went to the wall phone in the kitchen.
Amanda just finishing breakfast herself jumped up from the table and picked up her cell phone from the kitchen counter, “Hello?”
“Amanda dear, it’s Mum, eh I just finished reading the morning paper dear and Amanda what has happened to Winnie?”
It as the phone call she had put off making, dreading having to deal with her Mum and knowing her Auntie was not in a fit condition to talk to her sister.
“Oh Mum, it was a very, very stressful thing for Auntie. She is resting this morning and I shouldn’t bother her. I don’t know what you’ve read, I’m surprised it made it to your paper, anyway she’s fine and actually quite the hero although she doesn’t see it quite that way as yet.”
“There was a shooting, Winnie?”
“Oh yes indeed Mum.”
“I’m coming at once, Col Rammond,” she called out, “would you see to my luggage at once please?”
“Oh Mum, it’s not necessary really it isn’t, there’s no need for you…Mum?”
“As soon as I have a flight I shall call you with my travel arrangements, where is the closest airport to you dear?”
“Oh Mum, please don’t…its Coffs Harbour, there’s an airport there. When do you think…?”
“I’ll let you know dear, next flight I should think if I can get a seat. I’ll be calling you back soon, ta ra.”
Amanda closed her phone and looked over at Johnny’s place at the table, he’d gone to take a shower. What was she going to do about Johnny? Her mother didn’t know about him! She’d be expecting to stay with her. “Oh Au-n-t-i-e Win,” she moaned aloud.
