Richie and Travis Make it Legal
Kyle Corvin parked the vehicle in front of Millie’s and got out opening the door for Travis. Travis was getting used to this but still didn’t like it he got out and walked over to the Solicitor’s office and opened the door, Kyle came with him.
"G’day, I’m Travis McGee I have an appointment with Mr. Roberts."
"Mr. McGee he’s been expecting you sir please just a moment." Miss Peeg knocked on Richie’s door and opened it, "Mr. McGee is here Mr. Roberts."
"Go right in…would you care for coffee, tea?" she asked and looked over at Kyle who had not been introduced.
"I’m good, thanks anyway," Travis said as he went through the door.
"I’ll take a coffee," Kyle said, "I’m Kyle Corvin by the way, Mr. McGee’s right hand man."
"A right hand man, how interesting Mr. Corvin and what does a right hand do?"
"I appreciate your seeing me on such short notice Mr. Roberts," Travis said sitting down in the leather visitor chair.
"No problem, I believe you’re new to The Glen." Richie said getting comfortable in his chair
"That I am, I’ve had the ranch…it’s the Glenridge Station, for about a month but I’ve only been here a few days."
"Welcome I hope you’re going to enjoy living here…shame about what happened on your property not your usual thing for this area."
Travis looked up at him, "Yeah…a shame alright not a good beginning but I’m trying to get on with it. I’ve come today about my nephew," Travis drew the folded piece of paper from his pocket. "This is what I have in way of a legacy I guess you might say, I also have all his papers here, birth certificate and what all, and mine in case I need to prove who I am. What I want is to have whatever is necessary to make him legally mine to look after."
Richie took the papers and looked them over, "So what is it exactly you want…legal custody or are you going to adopt?"
"Adopt? Is that what I need to do?"
"No not necessarily you can be appointed his guardian."
"I want whatever is going to work Mr. Roberts for that boy to stay with me, he’s my blood nephew, my sister’s kid and she’s dead a week and a half ago. If being a guardian is what does it then that’s the way to go."
"Okay that’s the route we’ll take you’ll be responsible for his medical, education and well being…"
"Well that goes without saying; I intend to provide him with whatever he needs in life."
"I’ll have to petition the court and word will go out so if anybody else has a claim on him they’ll come forward to be considered." Richie placed the papers back in a folder.
"I don’t think that will be a problem Mr. Roberts, the boy doesn’t have anybody else that gives a shit about him or even knows him."
Richie sat back and studied Travis for a moment he figured him for a straight up honest man, passionate about things he cared about, "I’ll get right on it Mr. McGee."
Travis stood up and shook Richie’s hand, "another thing Mr. Roberts, anything legal comes at me over that murder on my property…you’re the man." Travis met his eye.
"You might want to know I am also representing the man that was living on your property in the cabin."
"Is that right, I never met him or the poor girl that was killed. In fact I intended to go over there and talk to them, I had in mind to let them stay if things were okay over there, maybe charge a little rent you know. I wish I had found the time now…I wish a lot of things," he said looking toward the door.
Richie smiled, "One thing I know Mr. McGee you can’t go back in time and change a damn thing. Good or bad there’s nothing that can be done about yesterday. There’s only today and tomorrow we have any control over at all."
Travis met his eyes, "truer words have never been spoken. It’s good to have met you, just ah…"
"I’ll let you know as soon as I hear anything."
"Oh, there won’t be any problem getting him into school will there?" Travis remembered
"Shouldn’t be but if you need anything from me…I’ll be happy to oblige."
"Thanks, thanks a lot."
Travis and Kyle left the office and Miss Peeg gathered up the dirty coffee cup and filed away the information she’d gotten from Kyle. A little bit here and there…one never knew when such would be important.
"I don’t believe you met his security man," she said glancing in Richie’s door.
"What security man Miss Peeg," he asked
"Oh…a Mr. Corvin…Kyle Corvin to be exact…he was in the special forces and did you know, he has special training, oh yes he does…looks after Mr. McGee… he was also a famous footballer…very strong and fit he is."
Richie looked up from his paperwork, "is there something specific you’re trying to tell me Miss Peeg?"
"Oh no Sir, only that he’s a man one wouldn’t want to um tangle with." She said raising her brows.
"I don’t plan to tangle Miss Peeg." Richie said smiling to himself and turning to his computer.
