Angel Donor

John was at his desk when Siobhan walked into the station. She knocked lightly on the door of his office and pushed it open.

"Morning, Sheriff. I brought you a coffee from the boarding house." Placing two foam cups with lids in front of him, she sat down in the chair by his desk. "Two sugars and cream, right?"

John looked at the cup. "Did Millie make this or Andy?"

"Andy."

For the first time since they met, John smiled in front of Siobhan. "Good morning, then. I wasn’t sure I could handle another cup of Milles brew. She’s a wonderful woman but she needs to stay as far away from the kitchen as possible.

"I’m learning. I’ll be staying at the there for the time being though, just until I can find a house. I got the room right next to yours, Sheriff."

Oh joy! He thought to himself but he responded to her with a nod and a grunt. She seemed anxious to him. What was that all about? Was she professional or what?

"So what’s on the agenda today, Chief? Do I get my own prowler or what?"

John tilted his head down and looked at her over the bridge of his nose. "Deputy Hennessey this is a small town. We don’t have two prowlers yet. You’ll ride with me today." He sighed. "As for today’s agenda, we have something to look into. As you may know there’s a wedding coming up. The entire town is invited to it. The bride and groom have asked for donations to the Glen Park fund in lieu of gifts. Someone topped their till in one shot. Considering the residents of this town, I’m a little suspicious of this. Who could pull nearly nineteen grand out of their pocket like that?"

"It sounds to me like they had an angel donor. Where are the donations sent?"

"There’s an escrow account set up at a bank in Coffs. We’re going to take a ride out there to see just who this angel is."

"Great. You got a subpoena?"

John set his cup down on the desk. He uttered one word. "Shit."

"Well then, Chief. I guess that mean’s we’re headed off to the magistrate’s court. That is what they call it here in Australia, isn’t it?"

"Yep." John stood from his chair. He swept his hair back with his hand before snatching the keys off of his desk.

"Can I drive?" Siobhan asked, giving him a faux puppy eyed look.

"No." he replied succinctly.
