And Baby Will Make Three

By Marie S

Lachlan twirled Ashley around and around as she giggled and held on tight. And then it happened.

"Lach, put me down. Ooh, right now."

He heard the urgency in her voice and set her down quickly. If he hadn’t held onto her she’d have fallen on her shapely little bottom. The room was spinning a bit and she didn’t feel very well at all.

Ashley sat down on the edge of the couch and put her head down on her knees. Lachlan knelt by her side.

"Are you okay, love? And the baby?" Ashley peered up at him and saw the concern on his face.

"I think I’m going to be fine. You might have to refrain from spinning me around for a couple of months. At least until I’m out of my first trimester." She smiled at him. Her fingers reached out to stroke his cheek.

"We’re really having a baby, Lach." A small wave of nausea found her again. She groaned lightly and put her head down again.

"I’m so chuffed, Ash. A baby. You need to rest. And have a lie down. I’ll do everything." Lachlan was off and running.

Ashley stared at him. It was starting already. She knew she’d have to fight him every step of the way not to treat her like a fragile pampered princess. Well, she wasn’t fragile. Okay, the pampered princess might be partly her fault.

She did like being treated like a lady. And she had grown up with some of the finer things in life. Her father had showered her with all the monetary things his substantial fortune could buy. Sadly he hadn’t showered her with the one thing she really wanted from him which was love.

Lachlan gave her what she wanted with all his considerable amounts of love. That he didn’t have any money meant nothing to her. Unfortunately, he didn’t feel the same way. He balked at using any of her money and worried about making a good living for the two of them. Now it would be three of them. Ashley had a fortune in her own right. Money need never be a concern for them.

Ashley had been learning to fly and nothing was more exciting than starting a flying business with her husband. What she didn’t know was how the news that she was pregnant would affect his attitude toward her working and flying.

Lachlan was a very old fashioned man. He didn’t really want his wife to work outside the home. Of course she wouldn’t take any risks with their baby, but she’d specifically asked the doctor before she left if there was any reason she shouldn’t continue flying and she had told her no.

Ashley wasn’t going to worry about that conversation at the moment. Lachlan was easing her feet up on a pillow and putting one behind her head. Next he hurried to the kitchen to make her some tea. She wondered if he’d even be able to find the tea or a teapot since they had just started unpacking everything into their new kitchen.

She closed her eyes with a smile on her face. The room had stopped spinning. It gave her a moment to imagine Lachlan as a father. Picking up their daughter or son and spinning the baby around. Taking him/her for flights in his plane before the baby could even walk. The baby nestled against Ashley with the two of them strapped in as Lachlan flew them over the sights of Australia.

Ashley sighed with happiness. She knew Lachlan would be the kind of father for their children that she’d always wanted in a Dad but had never had. The tea would have to wait. She drifted off to nap. Their journey toward parenthood was underway.
