For the first time in years James J. Braddock felt golden. From weigh-in to the first round bell he was focused, confident. Something to fight for, someone to love and care for him, to support him everything was back in place.
Jim was in his old fighting form. He still had mushy ribs and his opponent had managed a couple good jabs to them. But Braddock dominated the fight. When the final bell rang it was a unanimous decision.
Afterwards Joe began the old routine. Joe divided the purse then suggested, "Let's hit the spots".
Jim shook his head no. But that was where the old game ended. He didn't ask to be taken home as he had always done before. Instead he pointed to the suitcase he had in the corner of the locker room and said "Newark International Airport".
Joe looked concerned "Jim with the snow coming down like it is....your flight could be delayed."
Jim frowned at the suggestion. Once they reached the car he had to admit Joe had a point.
"Maybe we should call and check on the flight. That way I can tell Ivy when I call her."
Joe made some calls and came back with the news. Jim's flight was going to be more than delayed, it had been cancelled. All flights in and out of Newark International Airport had due to inclement weather.
There was no choice but to find someplace in the city to stay overnight and try to book another flight in the morning.
Ivy wasn't in her room when he called, so he left a message with Steve at the front desk. "Flight cancelled, will call back in the morning. Love, Jim"
