Australia Day

"I'm so nervous, "Millie sighed, as she put the last of the huge prawns that she cleaned on a bowl of ice.

"Why?" Steve asked. "It’s not like you haven’t hosted a party before and your cooking skills have improved so much now that Andy’s around.

"He’s a Godsend isn’t he and Brookie just loves him. I think we should ask him and Lucy to be her God Parents when Alistair baptizes her."

"It’s a great idea. We’ll ask them today. Anyway, you better get a wiggle on, mate. Our guests will be arriving soon and you haven’t got that fire going yet."

"Ah, yes, the barbie. The band is here already and they’re setting up outside. It’s a beautiful day isn’t it? We got lucky."

"Sure did, now go start that fire, Steve. I’m sure there will be someone along to help you."

Steve kissed her on the cheek then he gave one to Brookie. "There you go my little angel. I bet Luke will be here to play with you and pretty soon you’re going to have a new brother or sister too. Doesn’t your mommy look radiant?"

The little one hung on to Millie’s leg. She giggled from her daddy’s attention then she let out a "Weee" as her mom picked her up.

"Love you, both," Steve said before he left to get things going. "All three, I mean," he added as he headed out the back door. Maybe some of the other men would be there soon. There was plenty of beer to keep them occupied, that’s for sure.

Lucy backed her car around close to the back door of the kitchen. She and Andy had been to Coffs to pick up the flag cakes from the bakery that Lucy had made.

"Hey Steve, need a hand with the fire?" Andy called out "Lucy’s got the cakes."

"Lucy carefully slid a cake off the back seat, "Andy can you get the other one?"

"Sure love, into the kitchen."

Steve waved at the couple and offered a big smile. "Hey, I’d love some help with the fire but let’s get those cakes inside first. I’m glad you’re here before everyone else. Millie and I have something to ask you."

Taking the first cake from Lucy’s hands he gave her a kiss on the cheek. "These are beautiful. You sure do have talent. Come on inside. Millie is working on some stuff and she’ll be glad to see you two."

He led the way inside and the moment Brookie saw Andy she let out a squeal. "Unca Andy!" she ran for the man with her little pig tails bouncing. "Wooseee." She added, seeing the talented baker come in. "Hiya."

Andy carefully set the cake down and bent down scooping up Brookie, "There’s my little Sheila, Look at the bows in your tails!" he gave a pigtail a tug.

"Hey Brookie, want a taste?" Lucy let Brookie taste the icing on her finger, "It’s looking good Millie. Any thing we can do to help?"

Jake was already out of the car and Cindy was prodding Kim. He was a bit exasperated by her instance that he be social. "We should be running the shop."

Shaking her head and giving him a nudge, Cindy grinned. "No one is shopping today. They're all having barbeques and getting drunk. Think of it as networking for the store. And you called me boring."

Cindy walked up feeling a bit more confident in herself these days. "Hello, I'm Cindy. I don't think we got to meet at New Years party. This is Jake. I think you did get acquainted with him." She laughed as he started talking to the pretty little girl as soon as they walked up.

Kim put on a grin and his hand out. "G'day, Kim Barrett. I own Barrett's, down on the square."

"I think our kids got to meet," Steve said as he greeted Cindy. "Kim, its nice to meet you. Been meaning to peruse your store. It's great to have one so close to home. Driving to Coffs can be a chore when you have a business to run yourself. Make yourselves comfy. We're about to get the food on the grill."

Ed came limping out of the bathroom. "How do I look, Honey?" he asked Bron, who was sitting on the bed putting her trainers on.

"You look wonderful, my sweet. Come and sit on the bed and I'll help you with your socks and shoes."

Ed sat by her and smiled. She was only going to have to help with one foot today. He was determined to do the other himself.

Dressing done, Bron picked up Ed's walking canes and helped him stand. "You up for this, Mr. H?"

"Hell yes. I think it's gonna be fun," Ed replied, smiling.

They walked out to the car, and after Bron had Ed settled, she headed off towards Ceri and Max's place, as she'd arranged to take them to the Oz Day party at the boarding house.

"This is one of the partyin'est places I've ever seen."  Ben Wade was half-grumbling, half-joking as he pulled the black Ranger Rover up to the boarding house.

"It's part of leadin' a normal life, Wade," Dan Evans told him from the back seat.  "Thought that's what you were lookin' for when you came here."

"And besides," Liana put in from the passenger seat beside her husband, "since when don't you like eating, drinking and talking?"  She smiled over at Ben.

As the three of them got out of the car, Liana wondered if the sheriff and his deputy were going to show up at the cookout.  Probably.  She hoped they wouldn't be bothering Ben today.  She'd like to have a nice day just talking and enjoying her neighbors.

Liana approached Millie, showing her the chocolate cake she'd brought.  "I know you guys are supplying the food, but I figured an extra cake would probably be eaten anyway!"

The band was just about done setting up outside. The lead bloke was picking a bit on his guitar. He smiled at the people as they arrived, thought it was kind of cool that this new town sprung up near his place too. The seemed like a diverse bunch anyway.

"Oh go on child, you don't have to wait for me. I'm sure this will go on all day, I shan't miss much." said Winnie Peeg, still drying her long red hair.

"You're sure Auntie?" asked Amanda Cochran.

"Please you are beginning to whine," laughed Winnie.

Amanda bounded down the stairs and out onto the grounds, the band was testing mics, she did not want to miss any of TOFOG. Looking around to see who was here she noticed a young man by himself leaning against a tree with a beer in his hand. Rather a nice looking young man, she thought, and wandered over to introduce herself.

"Hello, I'm Amanda, I don't believe I've seen you before."

He turned and smiled, "That's probably because I've really just got here, I'm Johnny."

"Nice to meet you Johnny, are you here alone?"

"Yeah...you?"

"Me too...well except for my Auntie, but she hasn't come down yet."

"Could I get you a drink?"

"Yes please...I'll have what you're drinking." she smiled and watched him walk off to the coolers.

Getting out of her Jeep, Meggie smiled as she took in the sights and sounds before her.  Wonderful, sharing, kind people all in this community together to celebrate.  Not familiar with Australia Day customs, and still getting used to some of the terms and phrases she heard, she reached over and picked up a huge party tray filled with a variety of cookies.  Getting out, she looked for any sign of Jeffrey.  Then she saw him, standing over near Millie.  He was talking to a little girl, smiling and laughing right along with her.  Meggie headed over there.

"Millie, hello.  I brought along a tray of cookies here to say thanks again for the invitation."  She glanced over at Jeffrey, who had caused the little girl to giggle with glee again.  Meggie smiled, enjoying this moment.  "She's beautiful, Millie."

Alistair had driven into the little town where Ahnna lived, picked her up, and now she sat in the passenger seat beside him as he drove his little car back toward the Glen. "I'm glad you could come today," he smiled, looking briefly sideways at her. She looked beautiful, as always, and today was wearing a pale pink dress that set off her dark hair and light skin. Her cheeks were slightly flushed, almost as pink as her dress.

Ahnna was happy. She'd almost forgotten what happy felt like. But Alistair just by being who he was, reminded her, brought it fresh to her again. "Were you in Australia for the last celebration?" she asked.

"Yes, in Coffs. But it wasn't the same. Not like today."  Not like he hoped today would be because she would be with him.

Joimus came out of the greenhouse, tucking a camellia in her hair. It was nearly white with a shading into pink at the edges of its petals. She smiled as she saw Maximus pull their roadster up and stop beside her. "Finishing touch," she grinned, as he leaned across the seat, opening her door.

When she'd slid into her seat, he reached up and touched the flower. "Much like you," he said, his eyes smiling. "My finishing touch. Always."

Sid stood in his garage, his eyes scanning the array of vehicles at his disposal. Deciding on the silver Fiat, he punched a remote button, causing a wide
doorway to open at the top of a ramp. His tie today was silver. He liked...coordination.

Toni set the large tray with her seven layer dip and chips on the long table, she was excited to see the community turning out, some she hadn't seen since the wedding. "Its a good crowd Richie," she said beaming.

"Yeah looks like most everybody is here. Where's the beer?" he strained his neck around.

"I'm surprised you would ask that, you can't smell it?"

Richie smiled down at her, "Want one?" he asked.

"Yes," she said, giving him a playful nudge in the ribs. "I'll be near the stage," she winked. Toni liked the head Grunt.

Ben, Liana and Dan had gotten themselves drinks and were standing near Toni and Richie. Liana decided to go with Toni nearer the stage.  Leaving Ben and Dan drinking and talking with Richie, she followed Toni down front.

"I wonder who this band is suppose to be," Ben asked Dan and Richie, as he drank his beer, wishing for his usual whiskey.

"Somebody called TOFOG, the singer is an actor that lives near here, Russell Crowe...ever heard of him?" Richie sipped his beer.

Colin and Kate arrived at the tavern just as the band was beginning to warm up. Kate was all giddy for some reason over the idea of seeing this particular band play live - a fact that didn't slide past Colin, and he was teasing her endlessly about it.

"I'm gonna go get us a couple tinnies, luv, Should I even bother asking where you'll be waiting?" he giggled.

"You know where to find me," she grinned, gave him a peck on the cheek, and made a dash for the stage, where several others had gathered around to watch the band set up.

Jack, Bridgid and Jason arrived just in time to catch the first number. Yes they were running a bit late but when it came to parties like this, it didn't really matter.

Jason immediately went off to find a willing woman to spend the night with while Jack and Bridgid grabbed a couple of drinks and found a place to sit. The grills were blazing and a few of the guys were flipping snags and shrimps on the open flames.

The band cued up and played their first number. This should give you the idea of what their first tune was like.

Arthur made his way out of the boarding house and onto the tavern grounds, where the majority of the community had already gathered. The band was in full form, the barbie was blazing and the VB was flowing. He smiled and waved to a few friendly faces as he passed thought the crowd and headed over to get a bite to eat. Being quite new to the community, he hadn't really had the chance to get to know very many people yet, so he just stood off to the side and watched from a distance, munching on prawns and hoping to make a few new friends.

Amanda noticed the young man and took Johnny by the hand, "Lets go introduce ourselves," she said pulling him along.

"Hi, I'm Amanda and this is Johnny, I noticed you were by yourself and so are we."

Johnny had to smile at her, how could two people be by themselves? "Nice to meet you mate," he held out his hand.

Arthur smiled shyly at the young couple. "It's very nice to meet you both.  I'm Arthur," he said, taking Johnny's hand and shaking it. "Prawn?" he asked, holding up his bowl of shrimp.

Mystery wrapped her left hand around her soldier's waist and pulled him in close.  "If there was any day to arrive home sweetheart, this has to be it." She saw B and Jack sitting at a table, Jack with his habitual bottle of Port and B looking wonderful in her faded blue jeans and T. "We brought biscuits," she laughed as she put them down, "The Australian insisted." The four of them had been friends for as long as she could remember and it was good to catch up with them here.

Terry stretched to kiss B and put his hand out to The Commander. "Welcome back to Australia," he grinned.

"M, Terry, its great to see you again," Bridgid chirped. "I know, VB for you Terry and a glass of white for you M. I'll go get some more drinks for all of us."

Meantime:

Millie was still in the kitchen, amazed at the stuff folks brought. Liana's cake looked decadent and Meggie's cookies looked to die for. Hopefully she could get this stuff out onto the buffet without falling on her butt.

After the first number, Liana made her way back to Ben and Dan.  Dan watched as she wrapped her arm around Ben's arm and leaned against his shoulder to listen. He couldn't help shaking his head a little in disbelief.  Those two being together was the most puzzling thing he'd ever seen.  He saw Richie Roberts watching them as well, and he shrugged at Richie over their shoulders.

Richie narrowed his eyes at Dan. He made a mental note to talk to this man by himself. He shook his head slightly and raised up on tiptoe to see Toni still up by the stage rocking away. More beer he thought and turned almost running into Andy.

"Oops, that was my beer man," said Andy wiping it off his arm.

"Sorry, headed that way myself, want another?" Richie asked.

"You haven't seen Lucy have you?"

"No have you checked the stage?" Richie asked with a smirk.

Lucy had gone back in the house to help Millie bring out food. "It's nice isn't it Millie, just about everybody brought something."

Jim smiled as Ivy came out of the bathroom. She was wearing a new dress, mint green cotton with a small "trailing vine" pattern as she called it.....heck it was an ivy pattern if he ever saw one. "Are you ready yet? The band started playing already. I thought you liked the lead singer."

After pinning on the broach her gave her for Christmas she kissed his cheek. "Yes, I do like TOFOG. I saw them in Philly. But in my opinion you’re the best looking man in the Glen, Russell Crowe is only 2nd best."

Leaning in close to her he whispered, "Why thank you Mrs. Braddock," before kissing her.

"We had better make our way outside before we get sidetracked," she answered smiling.

Outside they held hands as they made their way through the crowd. Reaching the front of the stage where the other ladies were he gave her a hug. "I'm going to get something to drink. Have fun with 2nd best and the other girls for a while."

"I love you Jimmy." "Love you too baby."

Michael Stanley parked the rental car and followed the sounds of merriment to the grounds, where he saw Richie and walked over. "Hello son!" he said.

"You made it, aw Toni will be so happy...you okay flight didn't wear you down?"

"Oh no, my doctor gave me knock out pills. Now then it being Australia Day I suppose I should have a beer."

"There's wine if you'd prefer it." said Richie.

"No no...tradition," he smiled at Richie who walked off to find Michael a beer.

"I see you've come back," said Winnie.

"Oh, do I know you?" Michael wrinkled his brow trying to place her.

"We met briefly, I'm Winnie Peeg. I believe your daughter was being married."

"Oh yesl you were looking for lodging. I see you found it." he said smiling.

"We did, I may as well tell you...I'm working for your son-in-law, I'm his assistant."

"Are you really...well, I say what a surprise." She really was an attractive woman.

"Milllie, here, please let me carry some of that," Meggie offered picking up some dishes to take out the group.  She glanced up at the singers and grinned.  They sounded pretty good; chuckling, she saw Kate near the stage swaying to the beat of the music while checking out the singers.

Two large arms suddenly wrapped around her waist as a deep voice whispered in her ear.  "I missed you, darling."

She knew the voice without seeing the face; she recognized the familiar warmth and protective touch of his body without turning around.  Blushing, she set the dishes down and smiled.  "Why sir, do I know you?  I don't just let any man walk up and put his hands on me."

Laughing, Jeffrey whirled her around to face him.  He looked happy, his face clean-shaven and no signs of heavy drinking or of his dark, brooding nature.  "Hmmm...these fingers know this face, mouth, and lips," Jeffrey began reaching up and touching and tracing along her mouth.  "These hands and arms also know this sweet body."

Turning even redder in the face, Meggie coughed.  "Jeffrey!" she exclaimed with slight embarrassment.

"And this man knows his heart is completely and utterly gone...taken and held captive by a beautiful young woman."  With that, his arms encircled her, pulling Meggie closer to his chest.  Her blue eyes sparkled as she looked up into his eyes.

"Well then, sir...I must know one thing.  Do you kiss?"  she continued their game with an innocent tone.

Grinning, Jeffrey titled her chin up and slowly kissed her lips, leaving her breathless.  "Does that answer your question?"

"It most certainly does."  Meggie pulled away from him and picked up the dishes again.  "Help me carry some of this stuff, please.  And who was the sweet little girl you were talking to?"

Walking side by side, both carrying a load of food, Jeffrey's own eye's lit up.  "That was Brook. Steve and Millie's child.  God, she is so cute and reminds me of Deborah...."

They reached the table, setting the food down.  Turning to face him, she saw a hint of sadness and longing fill his eyes.   "Maybe, someday, we..." she left the sentence unfinished, waiting to see his reaction.

"Yes.  Someday," he responded.  "Come on, let's go join the others and listen to the music."  And with that, he took her hand and led her over to Kate and some of the others who had gathered around the band.

Max pulled up ‘round the back of the boarding house and jumped out to open the hatchback. He grabbed the first of four cases of wine. Taking it into the kitchen, he smiled at Millie as he gently placed the box on the floor. "I thought you might like a contribution. I had some wine shipped over from my vineyard in France. Hope you like it."

Millie didn't know what to say, so she gave Max a bright smile, a big hug, and a kiss on the cheek. Max smiled and brought the rest of the wine inside, then moved the car closer to the party and parked. They all got out and made their way to some chairs near Bridgid, Jack, Terry and M.

"Hey gang," Bron called. "Oh look...Russell has cut all that hair off. Doesn't he look fine."

"He sounds pretty fine as well," Ceri chipped in. "What a wonderful way to spend out first Australia Day."

Tom thought it was a waste of time going to the party. He was sure that Tori wouldn't enjoy not being able to hear the band. She was positive that she wanted to go though, and told Tom it would be a great way of meeting their potential new neighbors. Tom kissed her and picked up his car keys. He'd better hurry or the party would be over before they got there...

Jeff was enjoying helping Steve with the cooking. He'd always enjoyed Australia Day. This year was going to be the first without Harry, but he was hoping that being amongst new friends would help take the pain away.

Lach had a firm grip on Ashley's hand. He intended showing her what kind of food an Aussie Day celebration had to offer. And she was actually feeling like she wasn't going to chunder today. He gave her an appraising eye. She looked gorgeous as usual, but the tiredness was there and she'd bloody well lost weight the last couple of weeks.

Weren't new mom's supposed to gain weight when they were preggers? Get all round with big bellies?

He'd taken her to the doctor once already. He supposed he should feel better to have been told she was fine and everything was progressing normally despite the severe morning sickness.

"Lachlan." No response. Looking at him, Ashley knew that he was worrying about her again. She tugged on his hand. "Lachlan."

"Sorry, love. Just day dreaming." He took a sip of his VB.

"I'm hungry, Lach. I would really like something to eat with shrimp."

A wide grin flashed across Lachlan's face. "Wait till you see, Ash. There will be prawns as big as Sydney."

Ashley giggled. "That big? Lead the way." That was how she liked to see her handsome husband looking.

Maximus parked near the boarding house and came around to hand Joimus out of the roadster. It was simply always something he did, like

opening doors and pulling out chairs. She placed her hand in his, smiling up at him. "Did I tell you yet today how much I love you?"

"Three times, I believe," he grinned, "but I do not mind a fourth."

He leaned back into the car, lifting out a large dessert Joimus had made, an angelfood cake, hollowed into a thinner shell and filled with

chocolate pudding mixed with chunks of the removed cake portions. Dark chocolate syrup  dripped down the sides of the cake. "You know

how much I like this," he said, turning with the big plate in his hands.

"It's why I made it today."  She turned her head as Alistair's small car pulled up beside their roadster, delighted to see Ahnna sitting next to

Alistair. For the last couple of weeks, she'd caught Ahnna humming to herself as she worked in the greenhouse.

"I was hoping you'd come today, Ahnna," she said.

Alistair took Ahnna's hand. "She may not actually live in the Glen, but she's definitely a part of it."  He noticed the cake Maximus was holding.

"Chocolate!" he murmured appreciatively.

"Cardboard," said a voice from behind him. Sid was standing there adjusting a cufflink. "It's all cardboard to me."

"Non-humans do not eat," Maximus replied, leaving Alistair completely puzzled.

"Non...?" Alistair repeated, looking from the General to Sid.

"Pay him no mind," Sid smiled. "He's not fond of me."

"With good reason," Joimus said under her breath.

"You...you know eachother?" Alistair asked.

"For a long time," Sid said.

"Too long," Joimus breathed, taking Maximus' elbow and turning toward the boarding house.

Richie brought Michael a beer and went to find Toni. He spotted her pink and white striped sundress right in front of the stage, she was fanning herself with her skirt.

"Toni," he said moving up behind her and putting his hands on her hips, "hey remember me?"

Toni turned laughing, "Oh I remember you you're the guy that brought me right?" she said giggling.

"How many beers have you had?" he asked grinning.

"Not sure, they're passing it to me and I pass it on to the band and sometimes it doesn't get there."

"Your Dad's here, take a break and come and eat something."

"Dad made it, oh great, yeah I probably need to eat something. Save my spot Ivy, I'll be back." she giggled as Richie led her away from the stage

Ben had spied Maximus and his group arriving.  "Come on, darlin'."  He took Liana's hand.  "I want to go and speak to Maximus.  I've been meaning to invite him over to take a look at the stables and the horses."

"Okay, Ben.  I see that Ahnna and Alistair Harris are here too.  I've been wanting to speak to them.  Oh, and I need to ask Joimus about some more ideas for plants for the yard!"

"Dan."  Ben motioned to him.  "Come and meet some folks."

Maximus had just set the big cake down on the dessert table when Ben approached, another man following in his wake. He dipped his head in acknowledgement.

"Good day, Mr. Wade," he said.

"Mornin', Mr. Meridius."  Ben nodded in return.  "Ma'am," he said, tipping his hat to Joimus.

"I wanted you folks to meet Dan Evans, my business manager.  He'll be stayin' with us for awhile.  Dan, Mr. and Mrs. Meridius.  And this is Pastor Alistair Harris.  And this young lady, I believe her name is Ahnna?  She works for Mrs. Meridius in  her green house."

Dan nodded at each of them in turn.  "Good day, ladies," he said to Joimus and Ahnna.  "Mr. Meridius.  Pastor."

"Business manager?" Maximus replied, looking intently at Dan, sizing him up as a man of some integrity. "Horse breeding must be going well for you, Mr.
Wade," he added, turning his gaze back to Ben.

"It is goin' well, so far," Ben grinned at him.  "But not that well yet.  No, I have quite a few other investments and various businesses goin' on.  Without Dan here, I wouldn't be able to keep it all straight."

"He's been a life saver," Liana added.  "He came here and had the house built, the stables, everything.  Before we ever came.  Of course, he didn't do much gardening," she teased, winking at Joimus.  "That's why I'll be coming back to see you and Ahnna again soon."

"I like the sound of that, Liana," Joimus smiled. "Can't have too many flowers in the Glen as far as I'm concerned."  She was actually rather distracted from her conversation by being so aware of Maximus as he looked at Ben. She could tell he liked the fact of Ben's interest in horses, but was still somewhat reserved in his judgment of the man's character and trustworthiness.

Maximus wiped a hand briefly over his beard. "You have many businesses here in the Glen, Mr. Wade...besides your horses?"

,_.___

"Here in the Glen?  No," Ben told him, somewhat regretfully.  "Although I hope I'll be able to invest in a few somewhere down the line."

Here, Dan Evans broke in.  "Ben's interests are mostly in the States and Europe," he said.  "He owns a lot of real estate, as well as some other business ventures."  Dan liked Maximus.  He didn't normally make such judgements so quickly, but there was an air about the man that he found himself drawn to.

"No, we definitely can't have too many flowers." Liana returned Joimus' smile.  Then, she turned to Alistair and Ahnna.

"How are you, Ahnna?  Pastor?"

Even as she talked, she was aware of Ben's inner struggle.  She could feel it in the rigidity of the arm she held.  Ben still did not feel comfortable in this type of setting.  Oh, he could lay the charm on thick and appear totally confident, but Liana knew him.  Was growing to know him better all the time.  And to love him more.

"Good as always to see you, Liana," Alistair said, aware of a certain tension in the air. More and more he was discovering that there was much he needed to learn about the different residents in his community.  "You, too, Ben," he added, smiling warmly at the man.

"Thank you, Preacher."  Ben wasn't sure about this Alistair.  He knew Liana had talked with him and that she liked him.  And something the man had said to her seemed to have made her more relaxed in their relationship.  More comfortable around Ben.  He just wished he knew what it had been.

"And how's business for you here in the Glen?" Ben was continuing to speak to Alistair.

Alistair smiled slightly at Ben's use of the word 'business' in relation to his pastorate. "Quite fine," he replied. "I keep meeting most interesting people as part of it."  He wanted to find out more about Ben, get to know the man better, see what might lie behind that obvious guard he had around himself. "I'd like to come over soon and see about that western saddle if that's all right with you."  He let his eyes meet Ben's directly, his open and clear, absent of guile.

"Oh, there's a lot of interestin' people around here.  That's for sure," Ben replied with a grin.  "And you're welcome any time, Preacher.  How would this comin' Saturday work for you?  Of course, this young lady's more than welcome to come with you."

Ben turned his charming smile on Ahnna.  "I'm sure you and Liana could find somethin' to talk about.  Or maybe you're interested in some ridin' lessons too?"

This preacher seemed to have nothing to hide, but Ben Wade found that hard to believe.  In his experience, everyone had something to hide, something they didn't want known.  It was just a matter of finding it.

Alistair stood quietly, letting Ben probe his eyes. He had no shields, had never needed them. He had, indeed, known grief profoundly, intimately, but Ahnna's presence beside him brought a sparkle to his eyes that mitigated all but the deepest levels of that. And he didn't mind if someone saw through to that. It was his experience that every single person hurt more than anyone else ever really knew. If they found some fellowship with him in that, that was all right and could lead to a more open sharing.

"Saturday's good, Ben," he said then turned to Ahnna. "Do you ride, Ahnna?"

"Just a little," she replied. "Haven't had the opportunity to be around horses all that much."

"Would you like to come with me Saturday?"

She looked at Ben, who seemed rather formidable to her. "You...you would have something very...gentle?"

Alistair's eyes went back to Ben as he looked at Ahnna, wondering how the man would respond to her hesitancy.

"Of course, miss."  Ben spoke to Ahnna, even though his eyes never left those of Alistair Harris.  He could see deep hurt there but, overlying it was happiness.  And this woman beside him was the cause of it.  Ben could tell it in the way he looked at her, in the soft way he spoke to her.

"Anybody plannin' to give ridin' lessons better have some gentle horses, hadn't they Maximus?  Liana here hasn't been ridin' long herself."  He grinned at his wife.  "But she's taken to it like she was born in the saddle.  She can ride along with you, can't you, darlin'?"

"Of course," Liana smiled at Ahnna.  "Ben praises me too much.  I'm actually still a little nervous myself."  She wanted to calm Ahnna's fears, sensing her unease around Ben.  She understood it.  He'd certainly affected her that way in the beginning.

"And Mr. Meridius?  Joimus?  Why don't you come too if you'd like?"  Liana extended the invitation to them, knowing Ben would have done so if he hadn't been so intent on studying Alistair.  "We can all make a day of it.  I'll come up with a nice lunch."

Maximus liked the idea of being able to check out Ben's set up. Also he'd come to feel a certain protectiveness over Ahnna since she worked with his wife and was such a gentle young woman. "I should be most pleased to come on Saturday," he replied. "Is that fine with you, beloved?" he asked

Joimus.

Joimus, too, rather watched over Ahnna. "Very much so. The picnic sounds wonderful."

Alistair was delighted at the concept of the picnic with Ahnna as well as the opportunity to get to know both Ben and Maximus better. "There'll be

nothing to worry about," he whispered in her ear. "I'll make sure of that."

"Well, seems like we're all set here then," Ben said heartily, not quite believing that it had all come together so easily.  He wasn't used to things just happening.  Things had to be meticulously planned.  But he had between now and Saturday to plan the day at least.

"We'll look forward to seein' you all then.  And now, why don't we all have some drinks.  Get on with celebratin' our new country."

Max pulled up round the back of the boarding house and jumped out to open the hatchback.

Bridgid looked over at Jack and gave him a wink before she replied to Ceri. "Here's to good friends." She raised her glass and Jack added a "Here, here,"

"I'm told we're in for a hell of a fireworks display tonight too," Bridgid added after the toast. I think I'm going to love this holiday. Good friends, good food and lots of drinking."

Bridgid, my dear, you're looking beautiful today," Max said, galantly taking her hand and kissing it. "As are you, Joimus," he repeated the move on her. Ceri rolled her eyes at Jack and Maximus before giggling and dragging Max to his seat.

"How y'all doing?" Ed asked, taking the drink Max offered him. He smiled at Bron and raised the glass to his lips, waiting for her response.

"You shouldn't be drinking that, Ed."

"Don't worry, honey. I didn't take my meds today. I was determined to enjoy myself," he winked.

"Hot damn, I love the men around here!" Bridgid chirped. Her revelry subsided when she caught the look on Jack's face. "Stop it. You know what I mean. They're all so sweet and kind and good looking. Speaking of good looking. I really like that way that actor sings."

"This particular song has its merits," Jack added

Bridgid stood up. "Bron, Ceri, M, wanna show these guys how to dance? The guys can watch and drool."

Jim had wandered around the gathering for a bit. He had gotten his drink, he opted for a VB - it seemed that was what everyone was drinking. Now it was time to find a spot to settle down and enjoy the day. He had promised Ivy he would continue to take it easy. It was already about a month and he felt pretty damn good but she was worth humoring, at least a little longer. He found a bench from which he could watch Ivy and the other girls watching the band. She didn't seem as animated as some of the others but she was having fun. After a bit he noticed that she was looking around the crowd a bit. "Looks like she's getting lonely," he thought to himself as he got up to join her.

Maybe not for long though. Cal tapped her on the shoulder "Hey, Where's the champ, Mrs? He leave you alone again? I'd bet not. He's got to be around here somewhere."

Giving Ivy a little hug, Cal let her go to introduce her to someone. "Have you met my partner, Colleen? Col, honey, this is Ivy Braddock, the woman I told you about."

"Hello. Colleen, nice to meet you. Cal, where have you been keeping yourself? Jimmy is around here somewhere. He has to take it easy until his ribs are better."

Jim saw the couple talking with Ivy. He had no idea how she always seemed to meet people despite her generally being so quiet. "I am taking it easy. Promise." he said as he came up behind Ivy and wrapped his arms around her for a hug. Looking up at the couple he offered his hand to the man. "Jim Braddock, good to meet you."

"Holy crap. I'm one of your biggest fans," Cal took the man's hand and gave it a good firm shake. "This is my partner, Colleen."

She nodded and gave him a shy, "Hello, Mister Braddock."

"You did so well in that last bout. I'm sorry you were injured. You know I had a nice talk with Ivy and all I have to say is that you're a lucky man," He winked at Ivy. "We're both lucky. I don't know what I'd do without Colleen. She's my right hand man...uh woman."

Smiling Jim looked at Ivy. "I would have to agree with you. I am a lucky man," wrapping his arm around her waist. Looking at Colleen he amended himself, "We both are. Ivy told me about you helping her while I was away. I wanted to thank you for it. And please call me Jim."

His reference to Colleen actually made Cal blush a bit. That was a rare sight. "Jim it is than," Cal nodded. "I was wondering if you'd like to have dinner with me...with us sometime. We haven't had anyone over to the house yet and now that we're settled in, it would be great for you two to be our first guests. Colleen is turning out to be one hell of a cook and I think its about time I show her off."

It garnished a little pinch from her. "Callum, knock it off. I'm not that domestic and you know it but he is telling the truth. We'd love to have you over"

Jim couldn't help but chuckle. "What do you think Ivy? Are you tired of eating hamburgers at Millie's yet?"

Ivy looked at Cal remembering the lunch they had together and she smiled. "We would love to come to dinner. We can all get better acquainted then. Maybe you can help us write up an announcement for the paper."

"Announcement?" Cal queried. "Is this a big secret or would you like to spill the beans, let the cat out of the bag or whatever. We'd be more than happy to compose it for you but you do know that being a reporter makes you curious and you've just ignited something in me."

Colleen giggled. "Oh here we go. He's in Woodward and Bernstein mode. The evil investigator rears his ugly head and here I am just thinking you have some happy news to share with the community. Right?"

Richie, having somewhat straightened Toni out with a plate of food and a bottle of water, spied Jim and Ivy talking with Cal and Colleen. He guided Toni over, his arm tightly around her waist.

"Hey Jim, Ivy. Enjoying yourself? Cal, good to see you out again and Colleen."

Toni giggled, sliding her arm around Ivy's waist, "I'm being good." she said batting her eyes at Ivy.

"Toni, you goof. What are you doing?" Ivy said as she draped her arm around Toni. "Well Cal it isn't really a secret at all. Ivy has used her powers to persuade me that it would be in our best interest to stay here in the Glen. We just hadn't told anyone yet. The rest I'll tell you over dinner."

"I was having too much fun," Toni answered, "but Richie fixed that...you've told them," she whispered, "see I can keep a secret!"

Cal grinned widely. :"That's great news, Ivy, Jim. You'll be an asset to the community. We'll look forward to hearing the rest," Cal stated "Toni, Richie how's things going for you? I hear there's a new addition to your business, Richie. I haven't met your secretary yet."

"Me either, "Colleen added "But I hear she's a whip."

Richie had kind of a ragged smile on his face, "Ah that would be Miss Peeg, she's a quite a character. Very good at what she does...takes care of everything...keeps me straight I'll tell you that."

"She takes over for me when he gets to the office," Toni giggled.
Richie gave Toni an affectionate squeeze, obviously she needed more water.

"Maybe we should hire a secretary at the paper."

"What, you don't like my work?" Colleen gave Cal a look.

"No, darling, I thought it would help us out so we could spend more time together." he winked.

"You'll have to forgive him." Colleen gave the other couples one of those looks. "He's still getting used to a few things regarding us. He'll settle down in a few months."

Toni tilted her head, "I think you two make the sweetest couple Cal and Colleen it just goes together like the two of you!"

Richie grinned, "I think Toni needs another bottle of water."

"Well bye," Toni called over her shoulder as Richie led her away.

Both Cal and Colleen laughed. "I guess they're going to make the rounds," he said "Can't blame them. There's a lot of people here. Some we've still not met. Now that we're both healthy we'll have to start doing our interviews again. Jim, you up for it"

Ivy squeezed Jim's hand when she heard Cal's question. She knew how he felt about questions. He looked at her with hesitation in his eyes. "Jimmy, Cal's a fan he said so himself. Besides I promise he doesn't bite. He even survived one of my "burgers". She winked at Jim. Nodding he turned to Cal...."Ivy says Ok so I don't see why not."

"Great!" Colleen stated. "..and it will be at your convenience, when you are up to it."

"Right," Cal added. "No more business tonight though, this is a party and I think we should eat, drink and be merry. What can I get everyone to drink? I know Colleen would like a beer."

"I for one am starving." Ivy said matter-of-factly. "Maybe we can find someplace to sit and eat something. Jim took her hand. "Let's find you some grub. I would like another beer too."

East Driscoll came alone and he figured he'd leave alone. He stood near the bandstand, drinking a VB. Nudging the bloke who stood next to him, he pointed up to the man who was singing.

"Gotta wonder what the sheila's see in him. They're all behavin' like barnyard chooks, eh, mate?"

"Yeah they are," Colin replied, shaking his head, as he watched Kate dancing up by the stage. He giggled, took another swig of VB. "Oh, she's never going to live this one down, Mate."

"Name's Driscoll by the way," East stated. He shifted his beer into his left hand and offered his right to the bloke. "Is that sheila up there yours?" He could sort of tell by the way the man looked at her. "If you don't mind me saying, she's pretty. There seems to be a lot of pretty sheila's around here. Must be something in the water, eh, mate?"

"Colin O'Brien. Nice ta meet ya, mate," he replied, nodding, then chuckled, "Umm....yeah. yeah...that's my girl, Kate. Sometimes I think she's too pretty for her own good, though."

A third man moved into the mix just to add his two cents. "All the good ones are taken," Jason said as he nudged Colin. "Heard you say your name was O'Brien. I knew a bloke from Essendon by that name. Rellie?"

"Could be. Not sure, really. Can't say we're a close lot, my family, that is," Colin replied, downing the last of his VB and tossing the tin into a nearby trash can.

"Looks like I'm fetching three tinnies. Driscoll, by the way. East Driscoll."

"Jason Morgan," came the reply. "Any of the sheila's here unattached or did I throw my line in the wrong fishing hole?"

"Umm...can't say for sure about that, either," he chuckled. "Seems to be the question of the day. The way they're all acting around that bloke up on stage, you'd think they were all single, though."

Meanwhile, up by the stage....

"Hello, Katherine," Sid said, his voice deliberately low and sensual as he came up behind the dancing Kate and slid his arm around her waist. "Wouldn't dancing with me be better than eyeing the singer and swaying...alone?"  He turned her so her face was just below his and gazed down intently into her eyes.

"Oh, Sid!" exclaimed Kate, startled by his approach. "You startled me," she giggled, looking over her shoulder to see where Colin had gotten off to. Satisfied that he was no longer around watching her at the moment, she smiled at Sid and replied, "Yes, Sid, I'd love to dance with you."

Sid smiled, tightening his arm about her, and swept her into a dramatic move ending in a twirl and a low dip. He kept her bent backwards a while,

leaning over her, his eyes roaming her face and throat. His tongue came out just a bit, licking slowly across his lower lip, as he radiated an intense sexuality.

"You leave me breathless, Katherine," he said, his voice still low, though he was not in the least out of breath.

"Oh Sid, you flatter me," replied Kate, giddily, as Sid spun her around again. She looked nervously over her shoulder again for any sight of Colin. Not that she felt she was doing anything wrong by dancing with Sid, but she knew how Colin tended to overreact. She was having a great time and she really didn't want Colin to start any trouble today.

East was already on his way back with three fresh ones. He handed one to each of the other blokes then he held his up for a toast.

"Here's to all the pretty girls at the Glen. Glad I landed here."

Jason replied, "I'll drink to that. Just keep your hands off of my sister."

Mid swallow, East lowered his drink. "Which one is she, mate?"

Positioning himself right between East and Colin he pointed toward Bridgid. "That blonde right over there."

"Ah, ain't my type, mate. She looks like she'd pack your lunch and eat it too."

Jason didn't know if he should take offence to that or not. Opting for the not answer he nudged his head toward the woman dressed in a smashing little number decorated with ivy. "Either of you know her?"

"Don't even think about her, mate," Colin chuckled. "Unless you'd like to lose a limb or two. She's married to that famous boxer...Braddock is his name."

Just then, Arthur wandered up, eating his second helping of prawns. "Hello there, sir...er, I mean, Colin," he said, smiling at the trio. "Mind if I join you and your friends here?"

Colin chuckled. "Not at all," he replied. "Mates, this is Arthur Baskin. He just hired on to help me out at the garage...running the front office for me, keeping the books and such."

"Arthur, nice to meet you mate," Jason acknowledged.

"G'day," East added. "We were just checking out the fairer sex. Maybe we should nab a table, get a plate of snags and sight see for the rest of the day. O'Brien's sheila ain't goin’ nowhere so he don't have nothing to worry about. She's got a pash on that singer to beat the band."

"He kind of looks like you, Arthur," Jason chuckled. "I bet you're the one with the little black book around here, eh?"

"Well, I must admit that I have had my share of the fairer sex," Arthur replied, trying to fit in with the other blokes, and hoping they wouldn't ever find out that he in fact, in his 21 years, had only had the one girlfriend, Ivy. "However, being that I have just moved to this little community, I'm afraid that I have yet to meet any nice young ladies."

Colin stifled a giggle, and gave East and Jason a knowing, raised-eyebrow look.

Jason wasn't going to let this opportunity slip by. "Oh brother, we need to get you laid."

Before he could get another word out of his mouth East asked "Me too?"

"Yeah yeah yeah," Jason replied but not before we take care of our mate here. Colin who is that bloke rubbing up against your sheila?"

"What tha...?!" Colin exclaimed, as he spewed VB out of his mouth and spun around just in time to see Sid spin Kate around and dip her. "That slimey Armani wearing asshole!" he exclaimed. "I hope you mates have my back because I'm gonna need someone to bail me outta the pokey after I kill that Mother Fucker!"

Jeff looked up from the barbie and saw four young men sit at a nearby table. Grabbing a tray, he loaded it with snags, ribs, burgers and buns, then headed off towards them.

"G'Day, mates. Name's Jeff Mitchell. I'm the new plumber in town and part time barbie cook. You all look like you could do with a bit." He laid the tray on the table and smiled at them.

Jeff's timing, however, couldn't have been worse, for as soon as he sat down at the table, 3 of the 4 lads jumped up and ran off towards Sid and Kate, leaving him alone at the table with Arthur.

"Very nice to meet you, Jeff. I'm Arthur, he said, extending his hand. "Umm...please excuse my friends. There seems to be some sort of problem they need to take care of."

"Perfect timing, mate. It looks like we're in for a row and we can use all the blokes we can get," East rumbled. "C'mon, Jeff. Can't let that poncy fella trounce all over Colin's pride. Gotta stick together."

Never one to hide from any agro when necessary, Jeff jumped up from the chair and joined East on his way to the impending blue. "What's the score then, mate?" he asked East, taking off the apron Steve had given him while manning the barbie and throwing it to the ground.

Sid was well aware of Kate’s anxious glances and knew the why of them. He smiled more broadly and pressed her body even more closely into his, moving his lips next to her ear, letting his breath blow gentle puffs into it. "You are lovely tonight, Katherine," he breathed, "the loveliest woman here."

He pulled his head back just enough to meet her eyes. "You know that, don't you? There is not one who compares to you. Not one."  Yes, that sounded good, even to him.

Kate blushed. "Why, thank-you, Sid," she giggled. "If I didn't know better, I'd say you're flirting with me." She smiled, then added, "And, by the way, you look quite dashing tonight yourself. I like your silver tie. Very chic! Wish Colin would fancy himself up sometime, but I swear getting that man into a suit is near impossible."

"Getting me out of one can be...interesting, " he whispered, nuzzling his nose into her hair.

Sid's breath in her ear was having quite the effect on Kate. She cleared her throat, giggled nervously. "Kate, you've got a boyfriend! What are you doing!" her mind screamed. Her body, however, definitely wasn't thinking about her boyfriend right now, as she had suddenly broken out in a wave of goosebumps and could feel tiny beads of sweat on her brow. Besides, she wasn't sure what her feelings for Colin were exactly. Her mind raced, nearly as fast as her heart. "Umm...okay. ..," she finally managed to reply, though nearly a whisper. She was feeling quite dizzy and was only half aware when Colin suddenly appeared behind Sid - his eyes blazing and his fists clench and raised.

Colin grabbed hold of Sid's shoulder and spun him around. "And just what the fuck do you think you're doing with my girlfriend, Asshole?!" he screamed, as East, Jason and Jeff came running up behind him.

"Colin! No!" screamed Kate.

Sid had been waiting for it. He was always completely aware of his environment and all the players in it. Yes, players was the word, for everything was a big game in his mind. He spun lightly on the ball of his right foot, his arm lifting, easily knocking Colin's grip free. A tight little smile on his lips, he said

quietly, "Asshole? You may wish to rethink that, Garageman."  Eyes glittering, his smile widened as he slipped his fingers around Colin's hand and began to squeeze, keeping the action close between them and so unobserved by others.

Colin felt as if his hand were being crushed in a vice. His jaw clenched as he gritted his teeth in an effort not to scream out in pain. He could feel himself began to sweat and he began to breath heavily, but there was no way in hell he'd let this Armani wearing wanker know what kind of pain he was really in. Regaining his senses a bit, he glared into Sid's eyes and replied, "You might want to let go of me, Mate. I wouldn't want you to get that fancy suit of yours all covered with blood when I kick your ass."

"Colin, get away from him!" Kate screamed, as she grabbed hold of his arm and tried to pull him back.

Another hand intervened into the mix. It was Jason Morgan's. He grasped on to Sid's wrist and dug his fingers into the cold flesh.

"I don't reckon you should hurt anyone here, mate. You'd have a world of shit coming your way." He nudged his head back toward East who stood with his arms crossed over his chest. Jason looked at Kate and nudged his head again, asking her to step back.

Kate shook her head in disgust. "Whatever." she told them, throwing her hands up and standing off to the side. "I'm so fucking tired of all this. When you boys stop fighting over who has the biggest cock, let me know. I'll be over at the bar." She stomped off in the opposite direction.

Johnny Ryan watched Amanda playing with Jake and Brookie for awhile and wandered off into the mix to see what was going on. He spotted Arthur standing by himself at a table and walked over. His eyes followed the anxious look on Arthur's face to the guys near the stage.

"Hello Arthur, what's going on?"

"Oh, hi Johnny, Amanda," replied Arthur, nervously fidgeting his thumbs. "Seems that fancy bloke over there has been making some moves on Mr. O'Brien's... er...Colin's girl, so the others have run over to keep Colin from killing him."

Memories of another dance and another bloke moving in on a girl, his girl, flooded Johnny's brain, and he found himself standing slightly to the side of East, with whom  he exchanged a glance.

"Oh no Arthur, there's not going to be a fight is there?" asked Amanda, moving closer to his side.

__,_._

"Sure hope not," replied Arthur. "I'm sure Colin can take care of himself, though." He bit his lip nervously as he watched the others surround Sid and Colin. "Just in case, though, you might want to stand back here out of the way with me, Amanda."

Amanda smiled at the protective arm he held in front of her and backed up a bit. Arthur was a cutie, but her eyes went to Johnny standing by East. "I feel safe with you Arthur," she said.

Arthur nodded and smiled shyly, adjusted his collar a bit and sat up a little straighter on the bench. He might not be as tough as those other blokes that were standing up to Sid, but right now he felt quite brave and proud to be watching over such a pretty girl who seemed to think him a worthy protector. He patted Amanda's hand, and said, "Yes, you're definitely safe here with me."

Jeffrey and Meggie had taken a stroll down to the creek after watching the band sing.  Meggie enjoyed the performance, but Jeffrey knew too much loud noise bothered her after awhile.  And the instant he saw Sid show up, his temper also climbed.  However, not wanting to start something, he guided her away from the other women towards a quiet spot.

Returning, they could hear shouts.  Jeffrey saw Colin looking as if he would kill Sid, and some other men were there for backup.  Meggie saw Kate walk off towards the bar, upset. "What's he started now?"  Jeffrey asked, frowning.

"Everyone blames Sid first," Meggie answered.  "But Kate is upset.  Maybe I'll go talk to her."

Torn between joining the mob surrounding Sid or staying with Meggie, Jeffrey followed her to the bar where Kate stood.

"Kate, are you all right?" Jeffrey asked gently, touching her shoulder.

"Yeah, I'm fine," replied Kate. She took a quick swig of her VB then added, "I'm just a bit angry with the male population right now - no offense, Jeffrey."

"None taken, Kate.  I know how we can be asses at times."  Jeffrey took a seat and ordered a beer.  Meggie sat down on the other side of Kate, laying her hand on Kate's.  "But please be careful around that Sid...I don't trust him," he added with beer in hand.

Meggie rolled her eyes.  "What is it with you Glen men and Sid?  I don't...."

"Men like that are cunning, smooth, appealing.  Like to prey upon beautiful women until they have them caught in their web of deceit."  Jeffrey paused, setting his beer down to turn and glance over at Sid and company.  "Kate, don't be too hard on Colin.  He loves you and doesn't want you to get hurt...by anyone or anything."

"I'll go over and see how Colin's doing," Meggie offered, standing quickly and leaving before Jeffrey could protest.  Taking his glasses off to rub his tired eyes, he sighed heavily.

"Well...did you enjoy the band and lead singer?"  Jeffrey asked, offering a smile.

"Thanks, Jeffrey," replied Kate, taking another sip of her VB. "Yeah, I was really enjoying it until all this happened. Seriously, though, Sid's a nice bloke and .doesn't mean any harm, I'm sure."

"Well, I'm skeptical and have a hard time trusting after...ah, that's a long story and you don't want to hear it, I'm sure.  But just promise me, you'll be careful okay?"  He looked at Kate for a long time.  "If he ever touches you, follows you, starts calling you nonstop, leaves messages on your cell, tell Colin or me.  Hell, tell us both.  I like Colin; he's smart and head over heels in love with you.  He'd give you the moon, stars, sun, and the galaxy if you asked."

He reached out a hand and gently squeezed Kate's.  Her eyes reminded him of Barbara's, full of life and energy.  "Now, where's Meggie at?" he asked with concern in his voice.

"Thanks for your concern, Jeffrey," replied Kate. "I do appreciate what you're saying. I really do, but I think you all might have Sid misjudged. But, if it will make you and everyone else happy, I will be careful. I always am." She gave him a smile. "Now, go find your girl before she gets into any trouble."

"I'll be right back if you need me, Kate.  Damnit!"  Jeffrey muttered.  He saw Meggie standing with several men, all who appeared ready to take down Sid.  "What is she doing?"  he asked, as he jumped up and stormed over towards Sid.

"Excuse me a moment,"  Maximus said suddenly, looking toward the area where so many of the people had rather quickly gathered. He could see

Sheriff Biebe heading toward it. Sid seemed to be in the center and Maximus was concerned, because of that one fact, that things might get out of hand. He didn't want that, not with so many women present.

"What is it?" Joimus asked, catching the grim tone in his voice.

"Sid," he stated flatly.

"Oh," was her reply. "You will be careful?"

"Always," he said, touching her cheek lightly before striding away to join Biebe.

"What's that all about?" Alistair asked, watching the General.

"Sid," Joimus said, her voice as flat in the voicing of the name as Maximus' had been.

"Was he not just dancing with, I believe, Kate?"

"Sid never 'just' does anything, Alistair," she said, "not ever."

"You know this Sid...well?"

"All too well," Joimus sighed.

Alistair made a mental note to himself to get to know Sid better. He seemed to be a thorn in the side for many residents of the Glen and he needed to know why. "Wait here, please," he asked Ahnna quietly, then followed Maximus.

Ben and Dan went along as well.  "Looks like there might be some trouble, Dan," said Ben, his eyes twinkling.  "It might be nice to see someone else havin' trouble!"

"Just as long as you leave the trouble to someone else, Wade," Dan replied in a low voice, following Ben.

Meggie approached the group of men, knowing only Colin and Sid by sight.  "Colin, you okay?  Jeffrey is with Kate right now, over at the bar."  She blushed slightly as she glanced around the other men.  "Hi.  I'm Meggie, Meggie Ward."

"Bloody hell, love," East stepped in front of her and shielded her from the impending brawl.  "Meggie, darlin, you are one brave sheila stepping into this mess. You best stay back. I reckon things might get ugly soon."

She offered him a smile, admiring his blue-green eyes and the way they sparkled with fire.  "Well, thank you...." she responded with a pause not knowing his name.  Meggie looked over at Sid, who stood there smirking from all the attention.  "Jeffrey's right about you.  I could just shake the..." she muttered, taking steps toward the nanobot.

"Now, now, Meggie. Best step back a bit. Odds here are a dozen or so to one and we wouldn't want to get any of the dozen's blood on your pretty dress."  Sid was not in the least disturbed by the odds. All alone he was impossibly stronger than the lot of them together. He was mainly disturbed by the fact that Katherine had wandered away and was now talking with the grey blubber by the bar. He turned his head slowly in an arc, smiling at each of the threatening men in return. Most of them had no idea why he could do that, why he wasn't taken somewhat aback by the obvious outnumbering of his person. But his smile faded as he saw Maximus walking toward their little group, accompanied by the bearhat that passed itself off as sheriff of this burg.  He let go of Colin's hand completely, leveling an intent gaze at him. "Next time, runt," he whispered so softly no one else heard.

"Alright, Alright, Alright. What's going on here, " Biebe growled in his most commanding voice. "I hope this isn't what it looks like." With Sid in the middle of it he figured he was probably on the right track. "Someone tell me what's up before I take you all in and question you individually."

"Nothing for you to concern yourself about, Sheriff," Colin replied, gruffly, still glaring at Sid and rubbing his sore hand. "Just having a bit of a chat with my mate, Sid, here, about keeping his filthy hands off my girl."

"Don't talk about her dress, you nano-rat," Jeffrey said, finally reaching the group.  "He's your problem here, Sheriff, not Colin."

"Here's the bottom line. This is a party. Steve and Millie were kind enough to be our hosts and they're working so hard to pull this off, I've hardly seen them around. If you all want to make a fucking joke of it, well, carry on but if you have any respect for this town, for your hosts and for me , you'll go back to what you were doing before all this started. I'm not beyond breaking up the entire party if you're going to change it into fight night." Eyeing each and every one present, John noted Siobhan and Bud White who had taken up strategic positions.  It was great to have Maximus with him as well.

Colin glared at Sid a moment longer, then turned and nodded to the sheriff. "Sorry for the trouble, Sheriff," he said, then gave Sid one last glare before turning and heading off to find Kate. As he left, he passed close enough to whisper to Sid, "Keep away from my girlfriend."

"Colin, she's at the bar.  She's okay...a little mad, but okay," Jeffrey added as Colin walked passed.  "Good luck, mate."

Turning back to Meggie, Jeffrey frowned.  "What were you thinking?"

"To help Colin and Kate," she responded glaring back at Sid.

"Come on, let's get back to the party."  He smiled, offering his arm to her.

Et tu, Maximus," Sid said, as the General stood quietly at Biebe's elbow.

"You cannot help being who, I mean, what you are, can you, Sid?" Maximus replied.

"And why would I want that?"  Sid turned his gaze on the sheriff. "I was but merely dancing with an unaccompanied lady, your lawmaness. She was not

offended nor was she protesting. That is the extent of my role in this unfortunate brouhaha. I was the one assaulted and now I am bored." With that he moved smoothly through the gathering toward where he saw Kate sitting at the bar and Colin's back receding nicely into the distance.

"I didn't see him do anything wrong," Alistair offered.

"He is good at that," Maximus stated. "The doing and not being seen."  His eyes followed Sid's progress and he frowned.

Joimus joined them, sliding her arm through her husband's. "Come, darling. I'm hungry. Let's try some of this delicious food, all right?"

A last, low growl rumbled up the General's throat then he pulled his eyes away from Sid and lowered them to his wife. Perhaps the event could yet

be saved?  He hoped so.

Alistair stood silently a while, wondering at the source of all the under currents he sensed. The Glen was not such a simple, uncomplicated place as he'd first imagined.

From behind Maximus, Ben took in everything intently.  "Interestin' to see how everybody here reacts to one another, ain't it Dan?" he said quietly to Evans.

There seemed to be a lot of friction between this Sid and the others at the Glen, Ben thought to himself.  The only one he could see not reacting to Sid was Alistair.  Seemed he and the preacher had that much in common.  They both liked to observe and study people.  Find out what made them tick.  Ben found himself feeling more respect for Alistair Harris.

Spying Sheriff Biebe, Ben nodded and grinned at him.  "Sheriff.  Havin' a nice day?"

There couldn't have been a more perfect time for John to make eye contact with Ben Wade. Setting the plate of food he held down, John stood slowly. He walked up to Ben Wade with an air of authority about him.

"Mister Wade. It's nice to see you here, mingling with the rest of the citizens. Staying out of trouble, are you?"

"Just enjoyin' the party, Sheriff," Ben drawled, with a nod and an easy grin, not missing Biebe's authoritative air.  "I'm no troublemaker."

"Far as I can tell, you've been staying out of trouble, here anyway." John winked. "I hope you don't mind me doing some back checks on to where all that money you donated to the park fund came from. Tax records an all you know?"

"Not a'tall, Sheriff.  Dan here handles all that for me, and he's one man I know I can rely on to get all those damn taxes an' everythin' straight!  Oh, pardon me; I forgot you two hadn't met!  Dan Evans, Mr. John Biebe, sheriff of our fair little community."

As Dan took the sheriff's hand, his face completely composed, Ben went on, "And sheriff, this is Dan Evans, my business manager.  He'll be stayin' here with Liana an' me for awhile."

"And you'll pardon me for sayin' so, Sheriff, but I just don't understand this whole thing.  Not that I'm any expert on the law here in Australia, but I didn't know it was against the law anywhere for a man to give somethin' to worthy cause in the community."

"Pleased to meet you, Mister Evans." The sheriff stated. "Mister Wade, its not any different. Any donation over the amount of ten thousand is always under scrutiny no matter where you live. It its all legal and on the up and up, you shouldn't have anything to worry about. It was after all a very kind gesture."

Why, thank you, Sheriff."  Ben smiled and put his arm around Liana as she joined them.  "It was actually my wife's idea.  She knew we could afford it and she thought it'd allow the park to get started that much faster."

"It's good to see you, Sheriff."  Liana smiled at him, although her smile was a little tight.  She remembered their last meeting with the sheriff at the New Year's Eve party.

"Missus Wade, the pleasure is all mine."

He wondered just how much Liana Wade knew about her husband though she'd never have to testify against him.

"I see that they're about to light off fireworks. Our night will be coming to an end soon. I hope you've enjoyed it. It was all relatively uneventful with one minor exception but those things generally happen when the beer flows freely."

"Oh, you can just about count on somethin' happenin' at this kind of thing," Ben said amiably.  "Just glad it wasn't more serious.  Enjoy the fireworks, Sheriff."  Ben nodded at Biebe one last time as he led Liana off to enjoy the show.

Dan Evans also gave one last nod to the sheriff. "I'll be happy to provide whatever paperwork you need, Sheriff.  You can reach me at the Wades'.  Just let me know."  Between Dan and Ben, Dan was the more cautious of the two, but he had confidence in his financial handling skills.  Wade's tax returns and everything else would be in order.

As he walked away, he watched Ben and Liana settled back on a blanket to observe the fireworks.  Ben had one arm around her, her head settled on his shoulder.  Once again, Dan was struck by the differences in Ben's behavior since he'd come here.

Meanwhile, Cal and Jim were heading for the snack table...

"I don't think I've ever seen such a spread. I wish I'd brought a camera so I could write a big article about tonight's goings on. Sheriff doesn't look happy though. I wonder what's going on?" said Cal.

"That's the investigator in you, Cal," replied Jim. "Let's not worry about it tonight. We're not working tonight, remember?"

"Yeah, and I'm with Ivy. I'm really hungry. How about you three find a table and I'll go grab a bunch of everything here. We'll have a private smorgasbord."

"I'll help you...Ivy is fussy about what she eats. But then you have experienced that, you've had lunch with her." Jim laughed. .

"They all seem to be like that. Colleen won't eat anything that's got white sugar in it for some reason. The way I look at it is, this is a party, why not splurge?" he grinned. "It's getting late. Maybe we could still get some of those big prawns that Andy was grilling. You figure that Ivy and Colleen will like them?"

"I think Ivy is allergic to shellfish. So I think I should steer clear of those but there are ribs and burgers. Hey, let me ask you a question; the pattern on Ivy's dress, what would you call it?"

Turning back to look at Ivy, Cal shrugged. "I don't know what you'd call it, Jim, but its becoming on her if you don't mind me saying. Ivy is a beautiful woman. Before you take that wrong, I'm being objective. Something happened that no on knows about yet. You see, Colleen and I have um...well...I think I'm in love with her. I mean I've always loved her but I think I'm IN love with her."

The confession brought a crimson hue to his cheeks and he felt a little strange admitting it to Jim but if anyone knew what he meant it would be him. It was obvious how much Jim loved Ivy.

Jim smiled and nodded. "It is an amazing thing when it happens. I'm happy for you...and Colleen, enjoy it. As far as Ivy being beautiful, I know she is. I could never fault anyone for admiring her. She calls the pattern "trailing vines"; I think it is an ivy pattern...." Jim picked up the plate he had made for Ivy and added a few pickles. "I guess that should about do it. We should get back to the girls; I think the fireworks are happening soon."

Putting one more shrimp on the plate he would share with Colleen, Cal agreed with a nod. "Yep, the fireworks signify the end of the party. Not for us though. I'm really looking forward to having dinner with you. Colleen will be nervous but it will be good for her to mingle a bit more. We do have to get back to our interviews and stuff," he grinned. "I miss that part of my job."

"You like that part?" Jim asked skeptically.  "I guess it takes all kinds. I kinda like things quiet, when I'm home anyway. No need to do anything fancy for us though as far as dinner goes. It will be good to eat somewhere other than Millie's or Coffs. Of course once we get our own place here things will be...well better. We can spread out some; I don't know how we have managed not to get into more arguments living in such close quarters."
Sitting down next to Ivy, Jim offered her the plate. She grabbed a pickle first. Jim chuckled "How did I know you were going to do that?"

Cal chuckled before looking over at Colleen. "After all this time, I know you like that too. I just never realized it." Setting the plate down he turned to face her before giving her a sweet kiss.

She smiled back at him and said, "How did I know you were going to do that?"

Just as she did, the first of the fireworks began to erupt in the sky above them. "I have that effect on you now, do I?" Cal asked.

"Not quite but we can save that conversation for later," Colleen raised her glass. "Here's to good time and good friends. I'm happy to know both of you, Jim and Ivy, and I'm especially happy to know you wised up Callum McCaffery. Cheers."

Jim and Ivy raised their glasses for the toast. Gazing at Ivy, Jim cocked his head sideways as he watched her delight in watching the fireworks display. It had been a good day. They were meeting more people in the Glen and he was beginning to understand why she loved it.

"Jimmy isn't it lovely?" Ivy smiled, leaning over to kiss him.

Putting his arm around her she leaned against his shoulder. "Getting tired?"

"Just happy, Jimmy. You'll like it here, I promise. Everything will turnout just fine." She squeezed his hand as the finale for the fireworks began.

Sitting there with Ivy, Cal and Colleen Jim felt at home in the Glen for the first time. Looking at his wife and newfound friends he could help but think to himself it indeed was a very good day.

Toni watched Richie walk over to stand beside Ben and Dan; something going on. She shook her head - young guys and booze.

"Are you enjoying yourself?" Michael Stanley walked up with a plate of food.

"Dad, I'm so glad you made it...I'm having a great time...uh what happened to Miss Peeg?"

"Oh, Winnie...she's around somewhere...facinating woman...we seem to have mutual acquaintances in Foreign Service."

"Well...how nice for you...a friend."

"Yes," he smiled.

"Are you coming to the house later?"

"No, I think I have intruded on you and Richie enough. I'll stay at the boarding house until my flat is ready."

"You didn't tell me you'd found a flat."

"The wonders of modern communication, dear."

"Dad, I'm going to get Richie, he doesn't need to get involved in a fight."

Michael laughed, "He has more sense than you give him credit for my dear."

Richie walked over to see what was going on, "Hey Ben, Dan what have we got here hot heads and booze?"

"Two things that never mix well," said Dan Evans, shaking his head.

"Roberts."  Ben nodded at him with a grin.  "How was the honeymoon?  Seems you survived the horseback ride."

Richie grinned, "Honeymoon was great after we got past the horseback rides. I tell you Ben, we should have been out at your place working up to it, two days in the saddle for this city boy was hell. Sore balls and a new wife don't mix you know."

"No, I'm afraid I wouldn't know anythin' about that," Ben drawled, laughing.  "Dan?"

Usually solemn, Dan Evans had to laugh at that one.  "No," he said.  "But then, my honeymoon was an awfully long time ago."

Richie felt a tug on his shirt and turned around, "Toni, whatcha need baby?"

"You," she grinned, "I just wanted to make sure you weren't going to get involved in a fight. Hi Ben," she said and looked at Dan.

"Toni this is Dan Evans, I don't think you've met him."

"Nice to meet you Dan. Its a great party don't you think?" Toni tilted her head, she liked Dan's face.

"Yes, ma'am, it is."  Dan wasn't sure what to say.  He was always polite and Richie's new wife had obviously had a few.

"Richie here's like me," Ben told her with a smile, "too smart to get into all this.  'Sides, it's more fun to sit back and watch.  See what ends up happenin'."  The last thing Ben wanted was to look as thought he might be involved in a fight with the sheriff around.

"Looks like it s all over anyway," observed Richie. He slid his arm around Toni, "How you doin', need some more food? Toni got caught up relaying beer to the band...I think she got carried away."

"But you came and rescued me...I think I'm going to go talk to Liana...I'm fine now Richie, you guys behave now," she laughed and moved away looking for Liana.

Liana had been hanging back, waiting to see what would happen with the fight.  When she saw Toni approaching, she asked, "Is everything okay now?"

"Oh yeah looks like its all over, that weird guy started something with Kate, why can't guys drink and party without fighting, I mean I've had a few but fighting is the last thing I would think about. Look at them all standing around. So anyway, are you having a good time? Isn't the band to die for?"

Kate was sitting alone at the bar, drinking a tinny of VB when Colin walked up behind her.

"Was looking for you," he spoke softly to her, wrapping his arms around her waist and nuzzling her neck.

"Well, ya found me, I reckon," she huffed, taking another sip of her beer.

Colin stepped around and sat down beside her at the bar. "Why'd you run of like that?"

Kate let out a sigh, kept looking straight ahead and not at Colin. "I told you why. Maybe if you hadn't been trying so bloody hard to start a fight you might have actually heard me."

"Kate, what were you thinking? That bloke had his arms all over you. What was I supposed to do?!"

Kate took another swig of VB, set her tinny down, and turned to face Colin. "Oh gee, I don't know, Colin, maybe come up and try and talk to us first before you decide to just start punching?!"

"Kate..."

"Colin, we were just dancing. That's all. I like Sid. He's a friend. And, he seems to pay me a lot more attention than you do at the moment." Kate told him.

"What's that supposed to mean?!" Colin asked, defensively.

"Well, let's see...maybe if you had been spending time with me instead of hanging back with your mates, I wouldn't have had to dance with another bloke."

Colin sighed, placed a hand gently on her shoulder. "Kate, sweetheart, let's go home and talk about this."

She picked up her beer, took another gulp. "No, I don't want to leave yet. I came here to have some fun, see my favorite band perform, watch the fireworks. That's what I'm gonna do. You go ahead; I'll find a ride home."

"Kate, please, don't be like this."

"Colin, I really just don't want to be around you right now," she told him, flatly. "I need some time to myself. Go home. We'll talk tomorrow."

He stared at her a moment, and replied, "I don't want to leave you here, Kate. Just come home with me and I'll give you all the space you need."

"I'll get a ride. No worries."

Reluctantly, he gave in, realizing he wasn't going to change her mind anytime soon. "Fine. See ya at home then."

"Yeah, later."

Colin let out a big sigh and turned and headed off in a huff towards the parking lot.

Jeffrey and Meggie watched what happened from afar.  Slowly, Meggie walked up beside Kate.

"Kate, you need anything, a ride home or anything, we'll be here, okay?"

"Thanks, Meggie. That's very kind of you. I might just take you up on that," Kate replied, trying to smile. "But for now, I'd just like to sit here and have another beer."

Meggie nodded.  She reached out and touched Kate on the shoulder softly.  "That's fine.  We'll be right here if you need anything."  Looking up at Jeffrey, she nodded.  She could tell Kate wanted to be left alone for a bit and respected that choice.

"Think I'll go check out the desserts.  Jeffrey, wanna come along?" she asked.

"Yeah, sure," he answered, still gazing at Kate.  They turned and headed back towards the main tables.

"That's ok, Wiegand, I'll be seeing the lady home." It was Sid, having come up so silently the other three were unaware of his presence.

"Sid," Kate said, a bit surprised to see him standing there. "I'm so sorry for Colin's behavior. I can't believe he did that."

"It doesn't matter, Katherine. All that matters is that you are here and I am here and," he smiled enigmatically, "I understand there are to be...fireworks tonight."

"Yeah, should be a nice show of 'em. You sticking around long enough to watch, Sid?"

"I am," he murmured, sitting smoothly beside her. "Perhaps I might even make a few myself."  He leaned more closely toward her.

Kate smiled, cleared her throat. She hadn't imagined it; Sid was definitely flirting with her now. She giggled, nervously, and decided to see where this all led. "Umm...okay...." she giggled again, not sure how to answer him. She'd had quite a few VBs and was starting to feel their effect.

Sid was pleased. Not only was she beautiful, but she was alone and had obviously had too much to drink. His fingers trailed lightly over her hair and he could feel her tremble at his touch. He let them continue on down her throat and when she gasped, he whispered, "I know a better place for fireworks."

Kate's heart was pounding. Sid was turning her on, and even though she knew she shouldn't, she just let him. She was angry with Colin and confused about everything. She breathed heavily, then finally answered in barely a whisper, "Where?"

He didn't really answer, just stood and with his hand around hers, guided her to stand and then walked with her to his car. His eyes darted quickly around, making certain no one was watching, then he leaned her against the car door and kissed her eyes, one by one, so that she closed them and kept them closed. His lips moved down her cheek then to her mouth and he smiled as he felt her lips part under his. He knew what he was doing, knew how to make a woman feel as though she were a rare violin and he a virtuoso. Her knees buckled just a bit and somehow, without removing his mouth from hers, he got her into his car.

Later, after good meals...and good friendly chatting...

Ashley was so excited to have met up with her older cousin, Marie. They had been friendly as children since both had grown up in the LA area. Ashley had always idolized her older cousin and followed her around at family gatherings when she was a little girl. That had stopped after Ashley's mother died and her father no longer took her to the family get-togethers. The women's husbands had been amazed. Ashley and Marie had giggled at the looks on Lachlan's and Bud's faces when they finally met them. The resemblance was amazing when the two were side by side; both petite redheads. They looked more like sisters rather than cousins.

Marie had been busy working at the clinic that day and only had been able to come later to watch fireworks with Bud. Ashley was so thrilled. Everything in life she'd wanted was truly coming together here at the Glen. She and Lachlan had gotten married and now were expecting. And Ashley was reconnecting with family. Despite the edge of sadness that surrounded Bud and Marie at times, she adored the couple. She found herself wanting to look up to her older cousin all over again in a slightly different way. And she wanted to be her friend.

The two couples sat near one another on separate blankets, quietly watching the fireworks go off in the sky. They were wrapped up in their spouse's arms. A truly magical night.

Meanwhile, Meggie and Jeffrey no more than reached the table of snacks before Meggie heard Jeffrey swear under his breath.

"That son-of-a-bitch.  He's at it again!  This time he's got her in the car!"

Meggie looked up and saw Kate willingly getting in.  "Jeffrey, we have to...."

"That's it.  I'm going to...."

BOOM!  BANG!  A burst of fireworks went off while causing many of the guests to shout and applaud loudly.

Before he could reach Kate and Sid, the silver car sped off.  "Damn it."  Jeffrey muttered, his face flushed with anger.  Where's Colin?"

"He left, I think.  But he'll kill Sid if he...."

"Yeah, so would I if that was you in there with that rat.  I'm going to call him, now."

Another round of fireworks went off, this time louder.  Meggie looked at the smoke rising from the ground and then back to Jeffrey who angrily punched his cell phone.

"He's not picking up."  Jeffrey muttered, slamming his cell phone shut.

"Jeffrey, I don't ..." Meggie started.

"What?  You what?"  he asked, his tone harsher than he meant.

"Nothing.  Absolutely nothing." She turned and walked away from him.

Kate's head was spinning. She didn't know what was going on between her and Sid or where it would lead. His mouth was still on hers when she let herself be led into his car. Her body tingled in all the right places. When Sid finally broke off his lip-lock from her, she just sat there, breathing heavily, staring into his eyes - which were entirely mesmerizing to her.

"Katherine," he said, making the syllables of her name flow in the air around her like wine. He kissed the hollow of her neck as she leaned her head way back, then with his left hand on the wheel and his right doing marvelous things over her thighs, he began to drive. No one seemed to notice their departure, the others occupied with listening to the music, helping themselves to food or drink, and in conversation. He had no idea where Colin had gone, but Katherine was in his car with him and his hand was moving ever more steadily up her thigh.

Kate gasped at Sid's touch and her lips began to quiver. "Sid," she managed to nearly moan. "What are you doing to me..." She closed her eyes and let her head lean back against the headrest.

Again he didn't answer. He merely let his fingers lift the hem of her skirt and explore more...inwardly. His whole body had become so tense that he turned quickly off the lane onto an unpaved dirt track that led into a thickly-wooded section of the Glen. Deep grass grew in a small clearing surrounded by trees and undergrowth and within the blink of an eye she was on her back there and he was leaning over her, his face buried in the lovely curve between her breasts.

Everything was moving really fast and Kate felt herself swept up in the tide and going with the flow. Her heart was pumping faster and faster and the feel of Sid's hands and mouth on her bare skin was sending her spinning over the edge and out of control. It was as if he knew exactly where to touch her, what she wanted, what she needed. She let out a soft moan as he pressed his body against hers and she could feel the huge bulge pressing against her.

She was responding to him. Of course she was! How could she not? His lips, his fingers moved knowingly over her body, claiming every inch of her flesh as she lay naked before him on the grass. He slid himself inside her and they arched and curved together as he took her and himself with her up into the night sky. Fireworks began to explode somewhere over the treetops, fireworks that were as nothing compared to the inner explosion he caused in her, followed immediately by his own. He laid, then, atop her, his hands fisted in her hair, his face again against her breasts.

Kate had never felt like this in her life. Every nerve ending in her body seemed to have been awakened and she felt alive. She lay there with Sid, her arms wrapped around him, still trying to catch her breath and make sense of everything that had just happened. She knew she should be feeling guilty for allowing herself to give in to Sid so easily, but at this moment she didn't care. Finally, when she felt she could breathe again, she spoke, softly, "Sid, that was...amazing."

Sid, being what he was, needed no recovery time and responded to her statement by immediately beginning again, this time even more intently, sweeping her into a vortex of feeling, pulling her along with him into places few humans ever realized were even possible. And he drew it out and out and out, lifting her, swirling her, then lifting her more and yet still more until she was little more than quivering flesh beneath his expert touch.

Kate was completely surprised and amazed when Sid took her again, so completely and so soon. She had barely time to catch her breath when he was on her again - taking her beyond anywhere she'd ever imagined going or experiencing. It was ethereal and when he had taken her to what she imagined was her limits, he didn't stop but kept going far beyond until she felt as if she were a mere puddle lying beneath him in complete orgasmic bliss.

He could have done it again. He could, in fact, have done it endlessly, but he'd discovered in his experience with the human female they tended to pass out after a while, so he decided, for now, to leave it at the two utterly profound orgasms he'd brought her to. He liked lying atop her, though, and so stayed there a while until he realized he must roll off to the side or else he'd be unable not to take her again and again. Even his hand curved around a breast was too much and so he sat up beside her, cross-legged, looking down at her through half-lidded eyes. He'd been pleased with her response and had no intention of not doing this with her in future days. There was the minor irritation of Colin, of course, but in the long run he was of no real concern.

Leaning over her, he kissed her lightly on her lips, then stood, taking her with him to her feet. Her naked presence there before him was also too much and he instantly needed her again, so stooped and picked up her clothing, holding it out to her. No, he must not overdo it, not this first night. There would be plenty of time for more. He'd see to that.

"There are fireworks, Katherine," he said, his voice low, "and, as I said, there are...fireworks."  He touched her cheek and she swayed slightly, making him smile as her body leaned toward his.

__._,_.___

Kate felt dizzy and weak in the knees. Sid's touch of her cheek sent more waves through her body and she had to lean against his firm body to steady herself. Somehow, she managed to dress herself and allowed Sid to lead her back to his car. She didn't say a word the whole time. She didn't know what to say. She'd allowed herself to give in to her desires tonight, shutting her mind out completely from thoughts of her relationship with Colin. Colin. Oh Christ! What was he going to say or do when he found out about this?! She tried to block the thought out of her mind as she stared up into Sid's eyes. All thoughts of Colin seemed to suddenly vanish again and all she could think about was how she couldn't wait to spend time with Sid again.

Bridgid leaned over to Jack. "Tell me something, do the fireworks remind you of a firefight?"

"Yes, Siren, at times. I do not feel any...what do you call it? Battle stress from it."

"Nor do I. I wonder how it will affect Ed after his incident though."

"He will be fine, Bridgid. I am sure he will be fine."

Sitting back in her chair, she reached for Jack's hand but she kept one eye on Ed as the fireworks began.

Ed jumped as a particularly loud firework went off and he realized he'd broken out in a sweat. Suddenly he found himself wanting out of there...NOW!!! Then he felt the gentle touch of Bron as she softly stroked his face. She leaned over to him and whispered, "Do you want to go, lover?"

Her beautiful voice brought him back to the present and he began to feel foolish. He took her hand and squeezed it gently before kissing her palm. "I'm okay, honey, as long as I have you beside me." He looked around to see Bridgid giving him a worried glance. He smiled at her and nodded slightly.

Max and Ceri had noticed his reaction to the loud reports from the exploding gunpowder and both moved towards him; Ceri sat by his side and Max stood behind him, his hands resting on Ed's shoulders. They were family, and they were always going to be there for him.

Anyone who has ever been in a firefight or been shot at can relate to the feeling of fear that comes with thinking its happening again. Bridgid, Jack and Terry knew but they could see that Ed was in good hands and he responded well.

"He's fine," Bridgid sighed.

"Aye, he is a strong man." Jack added with a smile and a nod to him.  Turning back to Bridgid, he raised her hand to kiss. "We should stay at the Inn tonight, Siren. Steve and his lovely wife are sure to have a room for us."

"I think that's a great idea," she replied. "This has been a great celebration."

"Indeed it has, Siren, indeed it has."

M sat with her head on Terry's shoulder. "You know, I still have to pinch myself to believe this is all real."

He leant towards her and let his cheek rest on her hair. "To tell you the truth, love, I can hardly believe it myself. Been a great way to get everyone together though, eh?"

Her eyes were closing, and when she didn't answer him he knew just how tired she was.

"What about we stay here tonight, if Steve and Millie have the room? You're dead beat M."

Truth be told, she could have stayed exactly where she was for the rest of the night, but, the thought of only having to go a short distance to find a soft bed she could collapse into, knowing that Terry would be right beside her, encouraged her to open her eyes.

"Yes, and yes." She murmured.

Miss Winnie Peeg found a spot under the trees where she could see Amanda, who was sitting at the table with Arthur, a harmless nice young man she'd met at the boarding house. The other one, a rather rough cut young man she hadn't bothered to introduce her to...hmmm, she raised up on her toes for a minute as all the young men came back to the table...really Amanda.

It had been a nice day. Of course there was nearly a fight - that always seemed to happen when young men gathered, still she didn't like the look of the overdressed young man that had started it...for he had been dancing with Colin's girl...and then she left with him...oh dear...there would be trouble there.
It seemed a nice group of people and she was glad to be able to observe them all today.

Mr. and Mrs. Roberts certainly knew how to have a good time, and Michael...very attentive today. He was a very nice man and here he comes now. "Hello Michael, did you get enough to eat?" she asked

"Oh yes, very nice it's fireworks now," he said.

"Well, shall we watch them together?" she smiled.

Toni pulled the blanket from the tote bag she hid under a table and found a spot to spread it out. Richie joined her; another beer for him and a small glass of wine for her.

"Ooh where did you find wine?"

"Compliments of Max Skinner; I thought you might like a drink to finish off the evening," He bent and kissed her on the cheek.

Settling down on the blanket, Toni sat between his legs leaning against his chest. "This has been a great day...like our Labor Day you know, its the end of summer."

"Yeah, food was good Steve and Millie really did a great job," Richie said, taking a sip of his beer.

"Richie, I'm so glad everything has worked out for us here. I can't imagine living anywhere else; it's home and we've made friends."

"Me too babe, fireworks...look at that."

They watched the fireworks for a while, Richie beginning to think about a different kind of fire with Toni leaning into him, "I wish we didn't live so far away."

"Far away, Richie its less than ten minutes from here," Toni turned to look at him and recognized that look in his eyes.

"You are insatiable, a one track mind...and I like that track," she kissed him and turned back around to watch the fireworks.

Richie eased himself back away from her...just a bit.

Meggie headed towards the bar, feeling confused, upset, and unsure about Jeffrey and herself.  The guy handed her a beer, which she accepted.  Swallowing it, she coughed at the burning sensation in her mouth.  What the heck, Jeffrey did it, so she could too.  She took another swig, setting the bottle down and gazing up at the fireworks lighting up the sky.

"They sure are a sight," the man said, examining them.

"Yeah," she answered, quietly, thinking there were more fireworks going on than what appeared at the moment.  Another swallow and she set the empty bottle down.  Standing up, her legs swayed underneath her from the alcohol.

"You okay?  Listen, you shouldn't...."

"Don't tell me what to do," she angrily responded, glaring at him with blurry vision.  She turned and headed towards one of the band members.  Smiling, she felt more at ease than before, despite the fact her feet and mind didn't seem to want to work together at times.  "You guys are great," she said, finally reaching him.  He smiled in return and guided her back to the bar and on a seat.  He could tell she was drunk.

"Listen, luv, you got a mate here waiting for ya?  I'm sure he's...."

"No, no one ..." she answered, frowning, her head beginning to spin slightly.

"Luv, I think you've had enough," he said, wrapping his arm around her slumping shoulders.

"No, I'm fine.  Don't touch me...."

Damn...he still couldn't reach Colin.  Jeffrey turned around, expecting to see Meggie there and was surprised to find her gone.  "Meggie?" he said, trying to sound less upset than he had earlier.  He then spotted her, at the bar with one of the band members.  He quickly made his way to her, noting the band member holding her.

"Meggie?" he asked, realizing she had been drinking.

"She with you, mate?  She sure has quite a buzz."

Looking up, Meggie saw a blurred Jeffrey standing next to her, holding her hand while smoothing her hair back.  "No.  I'm not..." she started to say, standing up in protest. But the space seemed to suddenly swim before here, causing a wave of dizziness to pull her under.

Quickly, Jeffrey scooped her body up, and headed towards his car.

"No.  Put me down," Meggie protested, shaking her head trying to see and think more clearly.

"I don't think so, Meggie.  I'm taking you home and getting you into bed where you can sleep this off.  Why?"  he asked, trying to retain his control but allowing his worry to show.  Leaning her gently against the door, he quickly unlocked the Audi and slipped her inside.  Getting her buckled in, Jeffrey ran around to the driver's side and got in the car.  He looked over at her, seeing Meggie's head slump back against the seat.

He started the car and pulled out, heading to her house.  On the way through the wooded Glen, he glanced at her silent form.  "Oh, Meggie, I'm sorry," he whispered, and reaching out with his arm, gently touched her knee.  He'd get her home and in bed, where she'd be safe. He stayed there, sleeping on the couch in case she needed something.  Up ahead, his headlights illuminated the yellow house.  "Okay, sweetheart, we're home."

It had been a long night. Steve and Millie barely had a chance to say a word to each other let alone anyone else but as the cleanup began; Steve cornered Andy and took him aside.

"I've been meaning to talk to you all night. Do you know where Lucy is, Mill and I have something to ask both of you."

Andy stopped, "She's outside cleaning off the tables, I'll get her..." Andy wrinkled his brow a little worried something was up.

"Lucy, Steve and Millie want a word...leave that for a minute and come in."

"What's wrong?" Lucy asked wiping her hands on a stray napkin.

"Don't know if anything is wrong. Steve said they have something to ask."

"Oh dear, I hope its not about the room." Lucy followed him back inside.

Brookie was rubbing her eyes from being up so late. It wasn't often that she got to stay up but it was a special occasion. She did brighten up the moment she saw Andy, reaching for him at once.

Steve grinned. "You see, that's exactly why we wanted to ask you this. Brookie loves you both and well...." he looked over at Millie.

"What Steve wants to ask you is if you'll be Brookie’s God parents. You see we never made any arrangements if anything were to happen to us and we think you two would be perfect."

"That's right," Steve added. "She's going to be baptized when we renew our vows and we'd love for you to stand for her. We'll talk to Richie Roberts to make it all legal too."

"Whaddaya think?" Millie asked with a big wide grin.

Lucy widened her eyes and her hand went to her mouth and looked at Andy who was pushing Brook's hair out of her eyes, "Andy..."

Andy wasn't sure what they were asking of them and turned to Lucy smiling.

"God parents Andy; do you understand what that is?" Lucy was tearing up,

The smile faded, "Crikey...Me? I mean," he accepted a wet kiss from Brookie, "I love the little ankle biter, but I'm...I guess I don't know what to say...Luce?"

"Thank you...Andy, say yes." Lucy prompted

"I don't know why you'd think I'd be any good at that but yes...yes, I guess so if Lucy wants to. Godfather?" His face lit up with a wide smile. "Oh wait a minute..." he looked back meeting Lucy's eyes, "we aren't married...but we could be..."

Lucy's eyes got even bigger and she stepped back knocking the remains of a flag cake onto the floor. Splat! It fell upside down and she stepped in it and fell flat of her butt.

"Lucy, are you okay?" Andy bent down with Brookie in his arms and she took advantage reaching for a handful of blue cake icing and patting his face with it.
"Lucy?"

"I don't know...did you just ask me to marry you?"

A crooked grin started across his face, "Uh-uh, I think I did."

"Marry you, marry you," laughed Brookie, patting the blue icing on his cheeks.

"This calls for a toast!" Steve announced as he went to fetch a bottle of bubbly.

"Hey, wait. She didn't say yes yet," Millie called as she slipped on some of the cake herself. "Whoa. I don't need to fall. This little one inside of me wouldn't like it too much," she giggled. "I think I'll go help Steve-o find that bubbly to give you a minute to talk about this. I think Brookie wants her new God parents to be married though." Reaching for the child she paused to look down at Lucy. "Andy, might do you better to get on one knee since she's already down there."

"Are you serious, Andy?" Lucy scooted, smearing the cake along with her.

"Yeah Lucy," he got down on both knees, "I wanted to wait until we had our own place and something going, you know, but...it just came out."

"Oh Andy...yes, yes, yes," Lucy threw her arms around his neck, "it doesn't matter where we live. I love you Andy," she grinned wiping some of the blue icing off his face.

"I love you too Lucy...I love you," he took her face in his hands and kissed her.
