“About That Job...”
“I told you it wasn’t a good idea to get back into law enforcement,” Destiny told Zack, as she lay in bed next to him.
“Destiny, we’ve been over this,” Zack sighed, pushing himself up on his elbows. “It’s just the way things work – you shoot someone in the line of duty, you gotta take time off pending investigation. Nothin’ to worry about, sweetheart. Same thing happened to Bud.”
“Still, what if they go digging into your personal life, Zack? What if they find out about... things. About... me?”
“As the Aussies say, no worries,” he assured her, kissing her on the head then rolled out of bed. He slipped on a pair of sweatpants and walked into the bathroom.
After he finished his business, he walked back into the room and sat on the edge of the bed. “Besides, this is a good thing,” he told her, “Now Bud and I have more time to work on our security business, get it off the ground.
Destiny nodded, managed a smile, though deep down he could still see the concern on her face. “Now, speaking of work,” he grinned, “don’t you get bored sitting around here all day with nothing to do?”
She sighed, “Oh yeah, and how am I supposed to get a job without proper papers, Zack? I was using an assumed name at the last place, and now thanks partly to you, everyone here already knows me by my real first name.”
Zack reached over into the side-table drawer and pulled out a large envelope, handed it to her and smiled. “Perks of working in law enforcement... you get to know all sorts of people that can be of use.”
Destiny cocked an eyebrow at him, opened the envelope, allowing its contents to spill out on the bed in front of her. She looked up at him, then back to the items: a passport, i.d., Social Security card, birth certificate – the works.
“Zack... how did you?”
“Like I said, it pays to know people. Leave it at that. Now, you were saying about that job?”
“Later, right now I want you... back in bed,” she grinned, wrapping her arms around him and kissing him full on the lips.
