“Caught”
“Oh
shit! It’s Dwayne!” Abby exclaimed, in a loud whisper, as she quickly jumped out
of bed and pulled on the clothes she’d thrown off a few minutes earlier.
“I’ll
be right there... um... just give me a minute to... um... finish getting
dressed!” she called out to Dwayne.
“Calm
down, luv,” Colin told her, as he climbed out of bed and redressed as fast as he
could. “I won’t let him do anything to you.”
“You
don’t understand, you’ve got to get out of here... now! Before he sees you!” she
urged him, nervously, and pointed at the window across the room.
Colin looked at her, stunned that she would think of such a thing. “Why
should I leave through a window? Abby, I don’t understa...”
Before he could finish his sentence, she had opened the window and shoved him
through it – out onto the balcony, “I’ll explain later, I promise,” she told
him, giving him one last kiss on the lips, then quickly closed the window and
pulled the curtains closed.
Dwayne, meanwhile, banged on the door several more times, calling out. “Abby,
darlin’, you don’t have to get dressed for my account,” he chuckled, “C’mon now,
let me in before I get suspicious you got another man in there with you.” As the
words left his mouth, he gritted his teeth, thinking again about what he’d do if
he did catch her and another man in there together.
Abby pulled on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt then unlocked the door. “Sorry
about the wait, I was just in the middle of getting dressed when you knocked,”
she lied, brushing her hair back with her fingers. “Come in, please.”
He paused for a moment, apprehensive of her sudden change in attitude from
the night before when she’d pretty much kicked him out of her room. He’d
question her later about that odd behavior, but for now, he just smiled sweetly
at her and walked on in. “Why thank you, sweetheart, don’t mind if I do,” he
drawled, looking suspiciously around her room. “You alone in here? I coulda
swore I heard you in here giggling.”
“Of
course I’m alone, Dwayne. I was just talking on the phone to my co-worker,
Libby. She’s a character, I tell ya... she’s got these two guys chasin’ after
her, and...”
He held up a hand, “Shhh... I don’t need to hear all the town’s gossip,
darlin’. What I do need, however, is to spend some time with my beautiful bride.
So, beautiful bride, what say you and I go down stairs and have a bite to eat
down in that little restaurant?”
Abby bit her lip, hesitated, thinking of a billion and one other things she’d
much rather do than to have breakfast with Dwayne. Instead, though, she managed
a smile and replied, “I’d like that.”
“Good, then let’s go,” he told her, taking her by the hand and leading her out of the room. As they left, he turned around, pausing momentarily to have one last look around, then smiled at Abby and closed the door behind them.
