Desperate Call”

Abby sat watching quietly as Dwayne finished up with his phone call and grabbed his set of car keys. This was it... what she’d been waiting for; Dwayne was leaving the house.

Sorry, darlin’,” he told her, giving her a peck on the cheek as he headed towards the front door. “I’ve got an errand to run, but I’ll be back, don’t you worry your pretty little head off.”

Wh...where are you going?” she asked him, quietly. Her heart was racing and she felt quite strange. The doctor Dwayne had hired for her had prescribed some pretty strong meds and she was most likely feeling their effects.

Gotta meeting with a guy. Business stuff. Nothing you’d be interested in,” he replied, smiling. “Now, you be a good girl and get some rest like the doc said – I’ll clean up around here when I get back. Bye, darlin’.”

Abby waited until she heard the sound of his truck heading down the road before she made her move. Quickly, she ran to his office where he kept her cell phone locked up in his desk. In his haste, Dwayne had left the office door unlocked, so she was able to enter freely and went right for the desk. Shuffling around on his desk, she finally found something she could use to pick the lock. It took her a few tries, but she finally got the drawer pried opened and began rummaging around inside until her fingers clasped around the cell phone and pulled it eagerly to her.

She didn’t care if Dwayne knew what she’d done at this point, so there was no reason to worry about covering her tracks. She’d been planning this for days, knew exactly who to call. She’d ruled out Libby, figuring there was nothing the girl could do but get herself in trouble trying to help. And she couldn’t allow Cal or Colleen to get involved. Besides, Dwayne had let her know that he’d spread it around to her friends and let it slip to the sheriff that Abby was delusional and dangerous to herself and others and not to trust her.

That left the one person she hoped she could rely on to rescue her – Colin.

Quickly, she dialed the number on his cell phone, waited for him to answer. After 5 rings, it went straight to his voice mail. Shit. He was still screening her calls. Panicking, she quickly redialed his number. Voice mail – again. She wasn’t going to give up – she knew he was there, knew he was just avoiding her. If she kept calling perhaps he’d get curious and answer. It was all she had to go on. She had no idea how long Dwayne would be gone – it was now or never.

Colin, please, pick-up!” she wailed, helplessly. But by the 10th time she’d called and he still wouldn’t answer, Abby hung up and clutched the cell to her chest. Her head was throbbing and she was starting to feel drowsy again – a side-effect from the meds. “Think, Abby, think!” she commanded herself, closing her eyes tightly.

Finally, she knew who to call and quickly began dialing his number.

Thankfully, he picked up on the first ring, “Ross here,” he said into the phone, “What can I do for you, doll-face?”
