“Desperate Call – Part 2”

Alex had been in a meeting with the contractor he’d hired to do the construction on the new office when his cell phone rang. He was just about to send it to voice-mail when he smiled as he saw the name on the caller i.d.

“Sorry, Jerry, gotta take this,” he told the contractor, then answered his cell as he walked outside for a smoke. “Ross here,” he said, lighting up a cigarette and popping it into his mouth. “What can I do for you, doll-face?”

“Oh, Ross,” Abby wailed, “please, you’ve got to help me! I don’t have long, he’ll be back soon!”

“Whoa, slow down, slim,” Alex told her, concern filling his voice. “What’s happened?”

“It’s... it’s... Dwayne,” she cried again.

“What about him?” Alex blew out a puff of smoke, shifted on his feet.

“He’s had me here in this... this... mansion... for a couple weeks now and he won’t let me go.”

“I thought I heard you were on your second honeymoon?” Alex asked.

“That’s what he wants everyone to think,” she told him, “Actually, now he’s trying to make it look like I’m crazy or something. He even hired a doctor who has prescribed all these meds and he’s keeping me locked up here in this house. Please, please Ross, come and help me get away from here ... before he gets back and it’s too late.”

“Why me? What about the cops?”

“He’s told them all sorts of lies. Oh, just stop asking questions and get your ass over here before he finds out I called you!” Abby pleaded with him.

“Alright, where is this house located? Is it near the Glen?”

“Yeah, um... just on the outskirts. Huge ranch... third one past McGee’s place, can’t miss it. Please, please hurry, Ross! I’m afraid of what he might do to me if he finds out I’ve talked to you!”

“Alright doll,” he reluctantly agreed. “Just do me a favor – you hear him coming back into the house, you hide. Hide good, don’t make a peep. Got me?”

“I can do that. Thanks!” she replied, then hung up the phone.

Alex didn’t like the idea of going there without back-up. He didn’t carry a piece, wasn’t sure what he would be walking into once he got there. However, Abby’s plead sounded urgent and if she was telling the truth, he didn’t have time to ask around for help; he’d have to go it alone.

“Goddammit, Ross,” he said to himself, as he jumped into his car and sped off towards the ranch, “what have you gotten yourself into this time?!”
