“Making the Call”
It took him a week to make up his mind, but in the end Zack had reached the
decision that he’d take the chance and call Bud White about that security job
they’d talked about at the barbeque. He’d gone back and fourth with Destiny
about it; one minute he thought it was a brilliant idea, the next she’d talked
him out of it, saying he’d be endangering them both by getting involved with an
ex-cop.
Zack had done his homework on the big lug, though. Found out about why he’d
retired from the force, about that sweet little ex-hooker, Lynn, he’d run off
with, their eventual breakup and about the baby he and his young wife, Marie,
had lost before moving here. While he was at it, he checked the wife out, too.
Everything came up clean, just as he’d thought it would. Their story about
moving here when she and her cousins inherited the land was on the up-and-up.
Seems White was trying to go all straight and narrow now, staying clear of
trouble. Zack just hoped it stayed that way and the man didn’t decide to go
lookin’ into things he shouldn’t – like into his girlfriend’s past. That would
be... bad.
Zack liked it here, liked the town and the people he’d met. Be a shame if some ex-cop went and fucked it all up for him. He turned over the business card Bud had given him, sighed. Well, here goes nothin’, he said to himself as he dialed the number.
