Other Peoples’ Weddings”

Abby was completely surprised when Dwayne called her bright and early on Sunday morning, offering to take her to church services. She’d planned on attending anyway. Most everyone at The Glen would be there this morning, even those who normally didn’t attend Reverend Harris’ Sunday services. This morning was a special day, though, for right after the service, Andy and Lucy were to be married.

Abby loved weddings and was especially happy to be able to see two nice people such as Andy and Lucy tying the knot. She smiled at her reflection in the mirror as she slipped on her pretty lavender dress and her favorite strand of pearls (a wedding gift from Dwayne, on their own wedding day a few years back).

What had surprised Abby the most about Dwayne’s sudden offer was that the last time she’d seen him, he hadn’t been too happy with the good Reverend Harris since the man had talked them into postponing the renewal of their vows. In fact, Dwayne hadn’t even called her in several days. She’d been worried about him, so she’d called his cell phone and left several messages, but he hadn’t returned any of her calls. Until now. And here he was, taking her to a wedding.

Just as she stood pondering the idea of why he’d ignored her previous calls, Dwayne knocked on her door. “Open up, darlin’, it’s your lovin’ husband!”

Well, aren’t you just a ray of sunshine,” Abby told him, all smiles, as she opened the door for him.

I’d say the same about you, darlin’... you sure do look purty this fine Sunday mornin’.” He leaned in and gave her a quick peck on the cheek. “Ready to go watch some other people get hitched?”

Abby couldn’t help but giggle at the way Dwayne always seemed to phrase things. “Yes, and Dwayne, just so you know, the happy couple getting married today are named Andy and Lucy.”

That feller that owns the restaurant? That Andy?”

Yes, and Lucy, his wife-to-be, owns the bakery in town,” she told him, as she slipped on her shoes and grabbed her handbag from the vanity top. “So, what’s this sudden urge to go to their wedding this morning, anyway?”

Just wanted to see good ole Reverend Harris in action, I guess. Make sure he’s the right one to handle our ceremony... when we’re ready, that is. Yep, a man can learn a lot from other peoples’ weddings, and I intend on learnin’ myself all I can today, darlin’. Yessiree.”

Somehow, that worried Abby, though she couldn’t exactly put her finger on why. Hopefully, it was nothing. But still...

She shrugged it off and followed Dwayne out of the room and down to his car. It was certainly a beautiful day – especially for a wedding.
