"The Long Way Home"
Colin was feeling pretty good when he left the tavern that night. He’d met a nice girl, had a couple drinks, and even made a date to see her again. Abby. Even the sound of her name put a smile on his face. She was different, that was for sure. Different good, though. She seemed to have quite a knack for putting a positive spin on things. He liked that; even found that it might be what he really needed in his life right now.
Smiling to himself, Colin turned on the radio and decided to take a bit of a drive around before heading back home. The thought of that big empty house just didn’t sound too damn appealing to him right now; especially since it would inevitably bring back thoughts of Kate.
Kate. Shit. There she was again...popping up in his head. He turned the radio dial up a bit louder, hoping to drown out all thoughts of her. As his car meandered through the Glen, he suddenly found himself in front of the last place on Earth he wanted to be... that weird, cracked-egg looking eye-sore of a house that Kate now shared with Sid.
Colin couldn’t help but to slow the car to a stop and stare up at the place. She was in there...with HIM. His jaw clenched and his knuckles became white from gripping the steering wheel so tightly. Images of Sid and Kate laughing together... at Colin’s expense, no doubt... filled his mind. His hurt and anger began to consume him once more. Fuck it, he was not going to do this. He was not going to let her get to him any more.
Closing his eyes and taking a deep breath, Colin put the car back into gear and drove off into the night for home... that bastard’s house behind him...Kate now behind him.
When he pulled up to his house, Colin smiled, noticing that Kate’s bags were now missing from the front porch. "Good," he thought to himself, as he walked up the steps and pulled out his house-key. He was ready to move on, go forward with his life. He reached into his pocket again, pulled out the little slip of paper with Abby’s number on it and smiled as he entered the house and shut the door.
