"Trouble at the Boarding House"

By Stacey and Bridgid

Colin followed Abby back into her room. Had he overreacted again?  He sighed, as he walked past the broken door, barely hanging on by one last hinge. Abby caught his glance and placed a hand on his shoulder, "My hero," she teased, grinning. When he didn't smile, she added, "Sorry, it's just that, well... you came in here thinking you were protecting me, that means a lot. Thank you."

"You said you were going to explain what was going on here?" Colin asked, ignoring her last statement. He sat down in an armchair across from the bed, lit up a cigarette, ignoring the NO-Smoking policy.

"Yes, well... I know how this must look, but..." her words were cut off by the town's local Sheriff, John Biebe, who, along with the owner, Steve, had come to find out what all the commotion was about.

It was obvious to John that the door had been kicked in. He held up an arm to keep Steve back as he hugged the wall, not sure what to expect. Siobhan was seconds behind him and only Steve at this point would notice she came from the same room.

He could smell the cigarette smoke coming from the room and he reckoned at that time it was an intruder.

Placing his hand on the door, John pushed it open slightly as he kept his body against the wall. He knew his partner was there to back him up as he called in.

"Sheriff's department. Is everything okay in there?"

Colin sat back in the chair, blew out a puff of smoke. Great. Just Great. That's all he needed was to have that bloody sticky-beak sheriff on his arse.

Abby quickly spun around to face the man, calling back, "It's okay, Sheriff, really. It was just a misunderstanding. Everyone's fine in here, you can put away your gun."

John never really did draw his gun but its best no one beside he and Siobhan knew that much.

"I'd love to call it a night but not before I know what went on here. It seems," He stepped through the door and kicked a few shards of wood. "That there is some property damage."

He waggled his fingers at Steve to let him know it was okay.  Siobhan was busy shuttling residents back to their rooms so as not to create a crowd control problem.

John sighed when he saw O'Brian there.  "Did you do this, Colin?"

Colin just stared at the Sheriff a moment, grimacing. He took another puff of his cigarette, blew out the smoke, then finally replied, "I'll pay for the damage. No worries, Sheriff."

"Like I said before, Sheriff, it was all just a misunderstanding," Abby cut in, not wanting to see Colin get into any trouble. "Apparently, Sir Lancelot here thought I was... um... being attacked or something."

John drew a breath and let it out slow. He glanced over at Steve who just shrugged.

"It's okay with me." Steve said. "As long as the door gets replaced. We can move you to another room, Abby, if you like. Just so you can lock the door."

"Thanks, Steve. I'd appreciate that," Abby replied, trying to smile.

"That's fine." John said "But I want to know one thing. What happened here to cause O' Brien to think you were being attacked?" His gaze fell right on Abby and there was no mistaking that he wouldn't give in until he had an answer.

Colin raised his eyebrows, waiting to hear her answer, too. "This outta be good," he said, sarcastically.

Abby tilted her head, grimaced at him, then turned back to John and Steve. "Well, it's all quite innocent, really," she began, "Seems my husband, Dwayne, decided to pop in on me, thinkin' he could woo me back or something. Boy did he have the wrong idea. I asked him to leave, said my lawyer would be in touch, but he decides to make himself all cozy-like on the bed, then starts, well, playin' around, tryin' to kiss me," she quickly glanced over to Colin, who seemed to be getting angrier by the moment. "Anyhow, like I was sayin', Dwayne starts playin' around, tryin' to pull me down on the bed - and I, of course, was tryin' to pull him up to get him to leave, when Colin knocked on the door and surprised us both. Well, Dwayne let go of his grip and I ended up on the floor, and that's when Colin busted down the door."

Abby let out a deep breath and sat down on the edge of her bed, avoided Colin's glare.

John was now standing with his arms crossed over his chest.  He had one of those withering looks on his face as he spoke.

"Well, well, well O'Brian, ain't you the hero of the day? To be honest with you all, I'd like to get back to bed. I was having a dream about driving a Zamboni. For as blasted hot as this place is I'd say it was a dream I'd like to get back to but...and this is a big but...Abby if you'd like to file assault charges against your ex than I'd be happy to help you do it right now. If you feel you need some kind of protection order from him, we'll file it tonight."

Siobhan had finished getting everyone back to their rooms and she came in right at the end of what John said. "It might be in your best interest to do so, Abby. Who knows what your old man has on his mind."

"Dwayne? Dangerous?" Abby chuckled. "Only in his own mind, maybe. Thanks, Sheriff, Deputy, but I don't think that will be..."

"Yes, that's be great. Thanks, Sheriff. She'll do it," Colin interrupted.

"Colin, really, it isn't necessary. Dwayne's quite harmless, I assure you."

"Not what it looked like to me," Colin replied. "Abby, yourself a favor, luv, and listen to the Sheriff here."

"Up to you, Abby." John said with a shrug. He learned a long time ago that trying to convince a woman to protect herself can backfire more often than not. Siobhan on the other hand felt differently.

"Honey, you need to create a paper trail just in case. I don't know much about your ex but if he followed you here then he must have some ulterior motive. Listen I've been in your shoes and I wrote it off at first. Nearly cost me my life."

John didn't say another word, he just stood there with his mouth open. This was something he and Siobhan would have to talk about in private.

"Dwayne said he only came here to get me to come back to him. He wouldn't sign the divorce papers, which is why I finally just left, hoping he'd get the message, sign them, and move on. Seems that's not exactly what he had planned on doing, though," Abby sighed. "Look, I don't think he'd ever hurt me, really," she glance over at Colin, who gave her a stern look, then turned back to the Sheriff. "But, if it makes you all feel better, I'll stop by your office in the morning and file for that protection order. Now, if you will all excuse me, I'd really like to get some rest. Steve, I believe you said you could hook me up with another room?"

"You betcha." Steve replied. "By the way things are going around here, we'll have a few vacancies too.  I mean the Sheriff never stays in his room." he said teasingly

There was an awkward silence as John and Steve exchanged a glance.  Steve seemed to cower a bit but John winked at him and he breathed a sigh of relief.

"Alright, Abby. We'll see you in the morning."

John's gaze fell on Colin. "Keep an eye on her, okay?"

"Plan on it," Colin told him, then added, with a wink, "You have a good night, Sheriff."

"Yeah, yeah, g'night." John replied as he held back a yawn. He hoped the excitement was over for the night. He wanted nothing more than to cuddle up to his deputy and go back to his Zamboni dream in peace. Why did that sound so wrong?

Colin stood, watched the sheriff and his deputy leave the room, then turned to Abby. Placing an arm around her, he said, "I’m staying the night – in a chair, if you prefer, but I’m staying none the less. No arguments."

Abby opened her mouth to object, then thought better of it, knowing full well that Colin meant what he said and was only looking out for her well being.

Nodding at him, she quickly gathered up her belongings and followed Steve to a spare room down the hall.
