Storming the Harbor

Bud looked over at Zack as they drove toward Harbor's bizarre house.

"Ok, how do you want to approach this one? We just happened to be in the neighborhood and O'Brien claims you vandalized his house. Tell us your timeline for the day." Bud grinned at Zack.

"Seriously this dog is going to bark if we make one misstep in his opinion. We'll have to treat him like the upstanding citizen he probably ain't."

"Easier said than done," Zack replied, pulling into the long drive that led to Harbor's glass house. "But yeah, we gotta play nice with this one. Good-cop/Good-cop."

He parked the cruiser in front of what he assumed was the front of the house since it wasn't obvious to either of them exactly where the front entrance was. Zack and Bud looked around for a moment, wondering where the door was when it suddenly opened.

"Why hello there," Sid greeted, a large smile on his face, his 6 month old son in his arms. "A little birdie tells me congratulations are in order, Officer White." He chucked SJ under his plump little chin and SJ giggled loudly. "Fatherhood is such a blessing. I'm sure you and Marie will be so delighted when you bring your new progeny home. And what did you have, if I may ask? Girl? Boy?"

Bud whispered good cop in his brain and plastered a smile on his face. The kid was cute.

"Thank you, Mr. Harbor. Fatherhood seems to be making you happy. We had a little girl." A wistful smile crossed his face. He couldn't wait to hold his Eliza again.

Bud clenched his teeth. Harbor was going to play the perfect father for all it was worth.

Zack looked over at his partner, could tell he was thinking the same thing he was about this slimeball.

"According to Mr. O'Brien he came home early from work and found that someone had left him a message...covering every surface of the place. He seems to think you might have had something to do with it. We're not accusing you, we just need to cover all the bases, ask you a few questions regarding your whereabouts earlier today."

"Me? Goodness! And when was this vile act supposed to have been perpetrated?"

"At lunch time today. Right about noon." Bud watched Harbor carefully for any crack in his perfect fucking visage.

"Noon, you say? Why I was having lunch in Coffs Harbor at noon today with my executive secretary and three members of my board. The feature on the menu was roast pork." He visibly shuddered. "Pork and I are not on friendly terms." He kissed SJ's forehead. "Would you like names and phone numbers, gentlemen?"

"Yes, Mr. Harbor. Then we can wrap this up." Bud knew he'd end up having an airtight alibi. He figured the board members would back up Harbor's whereabouts. They were going to check. "Obviously there's no love lost between you and O'Brien. It would be easier for both if you try to avoid contact with one another."

"Avoiding contact with Mr. O'Brien is a goal devoutly to be desired," Sid smiled. When Bud pulled out a pad, Sid provided the names and numbers of his secretary and the three board members. He smiled again. "Our waiter's name was Toni, though I don't have his number, and the hostess was Evelyn. She had red hair and a smattering of freckles. I don't have her number, either, but feel free to check with the management of the Seaside Inn. I believe the manager's name is Floyd. I spoke with him on my way in and I had my shoes shined by Bob at the stand on the corner right after I came out." He looked down at his perfectly shined footwear then back up at the two officers and smiled again most pleasantly. "If that's all, gentlemen, I'll bid you good day. It's time for SJ's German lesson."

Bud slipped the pad back into his pocket after taking all the details down. The bastard must have complete recall. Bud nodded at him.

"Thank you for your time, Mr. Harbor."

Bud looked at Zack once they were back in the police cruiser. "That was about worthless as shit, partner. And who teaches a baby German?"

“I’m surprised that Harbor doesnt have him wearing 3-piece Armani suits already,” Zack chuckled, shaking his head as he pulled the cruiser back out onto the road.

“Alright partner,” he told Bud, “let’s get you back to your family and Ill start making some calls, see if we can wrap this thing up by the morning.”
