The Stanleys go Out and About

Into the Greenhouse
By Jo and Atonia
Gena and Carol entered the tavern and Gena got her martini. It wasn’t long until she saw her son, Jude, and Michael enter and go to the other end of the bar. Carol went to talk to Jude and left Gena gazing across the bar at Michael.
Why did things have to be so bad between them, she wondered, thinking what a handsome and distinguished-looking man he still was. She wanted to go and sit by him and talk to him about silly things, things that didn’t matter. There was a pain in her chest that had moved in and taken over the horrible black hole that formed after she found out about his indiscretion. She was unable to get past the elephant on her chest.
Soon the conversation behind her brought her out of her reverie; something about a greenhouse opening up in The Glen.
"Excuse me," she said turning to Millie, "is it far, the greenhouse and do you think they might do table arrangements or have something suitable for an altar?"
After talking with Millie she called Carol over. "You will be happy to know I’ve found something I can do for the wedding. There’s a greenhouse here in The Glen, I’d like you to drive me over there, if you don’t mind?"
"Now?" asked Carol.
"Yes, now." Gena finished her martini and claimed her purse.
Gena followed the directions and arrived at the newly-established greenhouse. They walked inside and Gena was immediately at home. This was her world…flowers. Carol wandered about and Gena spied someone near the back entrance.
"Excuse me, are you the owner?"
Joimus had been repotting an overgrown geranium and
turned at the sound of the voice, setting the pot on the table beside her. "I
am," she smiled, "how may I help you?"
"I'm Gena Stanley and my daughter Toni is getting married on the 20th. I wonder
if you do arrangements. I'm looking for something for the two buffet tables and
I'd like something for in front of the altar. I know its late notice but I'd be
willing to help."
"It might be a bit of a challenge, Gena," Joimus said affably, "but I do think I can come up with something. You'll be my first cut flower customer. I've only just today begun to get my florist section in stock." She nodded to a separate area off to the left. "Come with me and let's see what sort of flowers and greenery you think would work." She led the way, pausing in front of a display of flowers in bins of water. To one side was a bank of refrigeration units with still more cut flowers and all sorts of greenery. "Just let me know what appeals to you." She stepped back, letting the older woman be free to look as long as she liked.
"Where are you having the ceremony?" she asked as Gena stopped and opened one of
the glass doors to examine some flowers.
"The ceremony is outside," she turned and smiled, "not the best place for cut
flowers, I know. The green level area by the boarding house has been claimed for
the site. I really like these lilies with a bit of greenery. Nothing too showy
since the bouquets are being made up of flowers from her garden." She turned,
"aren't you coming? I thought the whole town was invited."
"Oh, yes," Joimus smiled, "I'm coming, most
assuredly. I just wasn't sure, I guess, which location had been the final
choice." She looked at the lilies Gena had mentioned. "I think these will be
lovely. I can make up some arrangements with an understated elegance if you
like. Will the one for in front of the altar sit on
the grass or do you need a stand?"
Gena thought about the altar. "I once did an arrangement of potted flowering
plants and when they were put together and the pots covered in moss they looked
just like cut flowers. Do you think we might put something like that together?
They could then sit on the grass and she could add them to her garden later."
"I think that's a splendid idea," Joimus said. "Let
me show you my potted lilies. They're back out this way." She led them out
into the main part of the greenhouse.
"Do you want all white Madonna lilies or would you like some colors?"
"Oh, colors I think, perfect for a country wedding." Now that Gena had
come to terms with her daughter's wedding decision she was into the spirit of
things.
"Are there any specific colors for Toni's attendants'
dresses?" Joimus asked. "I've got pastel lilies and these over here are more
vibrant colors. Which do you think will work best?"
"She only has one attendant and her dress is a sky blue so the pastels might work best. Do you have some one who can deliver?"
"I'll probably bring them myself, with my assistant
to help, of course. I'd like to be there to oversee their set-up. I have plenty
of moss on hand, so I think we can get that look you want. If you like, we can
arrange a time and you can be part of it, too." Joimus rather felt Gena
might like that.
Gena smiled, "I would love to help, say around 11:00 as that will give me time
to get the flowers conditioned for the bouquets and get Carol started. You've
been a great help, thank you so much."
"I look forward to it," Joimus said, walking with Gena to the greenhouse doorway. "That's a beautiful spot they've chosen. I always love outdoor weddings."
With a feeling of accomplishment Gena and Carol left the greenhouse for Toni and Richie’s house.
