She’s Got Him

Hando sat down on the steps of the cabin; he’d been into Coffs and picked up his last paycheck. Just as well he thought he didn’t like working on the docks anyhow. It would be hard to find another job now with the charges hanging over him. He still had no word when his case would come up in court. Marce had him by the balls right now she’d got him out of jail but now he had to sit tight and do good until the whole damned thing was over.

He lit a cigarette; it had been his plan to take off once he got out of jail; he hadn’t figured on Marce stepping in and springing him. He hadn’t figured on Marce at all she’d stuck with him and meant to stay with him. The changes she’d made in the cabin had surprised him as well he hadn’t lived in a place like this since he was a child. It was clean and neat and the little touches she’d added made it feel like a home, a real home and not someplace to crash until the next came along.

"Well I’m off Hando," Marce opened the screened door and stepped down beside him. "I left your dinner in the oven. I should be home around half past nine."

Hando looked up at her with a half smile on his face, "well you have a good evening Marce…how much longer are you going to work nights?"

"Well until you can find something…I make more money working second shift." She stared at him a minute, "you should go into The Glen and see the solicitor, see about cleaning up his building that would go a long way with the judge if you did it on your own."

"Yeah…I will Marce," he reached out and took her hand kissing her wrist.

"Promise me you will do that today," she said unmoved by the kiss.

"I said I would…I will don’t worry."

Marce bent and kissed him on the lips and walked over to where her bike was parked, "I’ll see you tonight."

Hando watched her straddle the big bike and back it up, "god what a woman," he thought. No girl had ever gotten to him like Marce; she wasn’t some little piece he could discard after he’d gotten what he wanted. Oh no, she had him and had him good. He stood up after she’d left and went inside to change his clothes, he’d go into The Glen and see the solicitor.
