Angel
Cort pulled a chair over and sat down, absently rubbing his hands up and down his thighs. Looking down on Scarlet as she slept, he wanted to touch her. Touch her so bad that his hands itched. He remembered that night, how he'd touched her everywhere...kissed her everywhere. He closed his eyes as his mind drifted back to that night.
It was a rainy night
When he came into sight,
Standing by the road,
No umbrella, no coat.
So I pulled up alongside
And I offered him a ride.
He accepted with a smile,
So we drove for a while.
I didnt ask him his name,
This lonely boy in the rain.
Fate, tell me its right,
Is this love at first sight?
Please dont make it wrong,
Just stay for the night.
"Need a ride?" The husky, Southern voice so full of concern.
Cort was so caught up in his own misery that he hadn't noticed the car when it pulled up beside him. Fact of the matter he hadn't noticed the rain.
"Darlin' didn't your mama teach you that it wasn't smart to pick up strangers?" He leaned in the window of the passenger side so he could get a look at the woman that voice belonged to. Down boy, that 'take me to bed' voice and that angel face sure don't go together!
And then she giggled, "Well sugah...my brothers always said I wasn't too smart. Look its raining on my seat. Do you wanna ride or not? I promise not to bite."
He put his fingers up to his hat, "Thanks, I 'preciate it. What's a little girl like you doing out on a night like this?"
Cort caught the look of pain that she tried to hide, "Sometimes I have trouble sleeping. I didn't count on the rain though. You passing through?"
They spent the rest of storm just driving and talking about this and that, nothing in particular and nothing about each other, not even their names. And then his stomach growled. "There's this diner up ahead and they make the best hamburgers in the world. I stop in sometimes when I'm driving around. I'm starving and I'd rather not eat alone. Would you eat with me?" Scarlet could tell it had been a while since he'd eaten, hell his stomach made almost as much noise as the thunder. They pulled up at this little hole in the wall diner, the parking lot was full of truckers most of whom said hey to Scarlet as she walked in with Cort. Cort just got the evil eye. The waitress appeared and handed Cort a menu, Scarlet shook her head, she didn't need a menu. "I hope you're hungry cause I'm starving. So you want fries or onion rings? I think I'm gonna get a double large order of onion rings, a chocolate milkshake and two Billy Boy's all the way. Billy is the owner." Scarlet giggled, "Good thing you're a stranger...I could nevah eat the onion rings if it was a date." Cort grinned, he couldn't help himself, the Angel was just plain funny without trying to be. "I'll have the same," he told the waitress.
