Digging In
Nonnie was never one to do anything without careful thought and preparation like when she opened the store in The Glen. She’d gotten to know the little village and watched the people go about their business. She’d chosen the location for her store carefully, just a quick walk from Millie’s, there was good parking and she’d made sure the items she carried in her store would be appealing to the age group of people who lived in The Glen, mostly in the 25-45 age range. So she was giving some serious thought as to what she might do about Richie.
After the initial emotional meltdown she’d gathered herself together and the next day was business as usual. She’d watched him as he left his office that evening, stand on the sidewalk looking toward the Tavern and then getting into his car and heading up the road toward home. Did he feel lost? Did he feel that same ache that she did? He hadn’t looked across the street toward her store, hadn’t looked up at her window to see if she might be there. Maybe he hadn’t thought of her at all… she made herself a drink and carried it through to her kitchen opening the fridge to finish off the dinner she’d brought home from Andy’s.
As she ate her dinner
, it was quite obvious he was avoiding her. He hadn’t been into Andy’s for lunch and he always went there unless he was in Coffs it was his big meal of the day. She knew he’d been in his office all day she’d kept a close watch on him. She would give him another day and if he didn’t come across the wide divide…she would. She’d made up her mind…she loved him, loved him with all his flaws and she wasn’t going to give up on him, she was going to fight for him. As she toyed with the last of her pasta, maybe she’d been wrong demanding their relationship to be on her terms alone. Like her Uncle and William had said, some men were incapable of fidelity it was her misfortune to fall in love with one. And there were worst things…how well she knew about those things.
She took her plate to the sink and washed up her dishes, tossing the takeaway box in the trash. She’d been alone for years and got on quite well but not now, not after Richie. She wanted him back. Tomorrow…she would give him until tomorrow evening.
