Disgusting Little Creature
Miss Peeg closed up the office and with a grimace walked across the street to Mr. Jessup’s corner store. She took a breath and opened the door.
"Ah Miss Peeg, how delightful," he put down his worse for wear feather duster.
"Mr. Jessup, I’ve come for tea."
"I thought you’d be around, takes more tea when you’re making it for two now doesn’t it."
Miss Peeg eyed him saying nothing.
"I suppose you know all about Mr. Roberts and Miss Tyler."
"I beg your pardon?"
"I believe they’ve had a blue," he moved slowly back behind the counter, "Holding hands all nice like one minute and the next she’s racing out of the parking lot and down Glen Road and he’s buying beer with not a smile anywhere to be found."
"I’m sure it’s none of MY business."
"I’ve got some Cadbury’s biscuits just in this morning shall I add them with the tea?"
"No you may not, the tea please and I’ll be on my way."
"Miss Scott’s in for a bad time I’m afraid with Mr. Roberts. He does like the ladies…"
"Mr. Jessup…"
"And then there’s Andy, you’d never suspect a nice young man like him but then I guess that’s the way of it now not like it was in our day."
"I’m sure we never shared a day Mr. Jessup," What in the world was he inferring about Andy?
"Of course her companion is blind, just as well I say."
"How dare you spread your dirty little rumors about Andy, I shall start ordering my tea by the post." She plunked down the money on the counter, "You may keep the change," and whirled out of his shop.
What a thoroughly disgusting little creature he was, she walked back across the street to her car and tossed the bag on the front seat. She shuddered thinking she actually had dinner with him once.
Regardless, as she drove carefully up the road toward her cottage, Miss Tyler and Mr. Roberts was a troubling duo made more so because she knew how Miss Tyler felt about him. If they had a misunderstanding of some sort she would most likely find the cause out tomorrow.
