Reflections In The Water

Kim passed by the window again in his room at the boarding house the rain beating against the glass almost obscuring the green across the road. His construction gang had gone home the day before after hearing about flooding on the roads and for sure they wouldn’t be back today. Rain delay he’d told his father in Sydney but they were making good progress. His father had been particularly happy about the fact he planned to live above the store. Kim wasn’t sure just how that had come about but somewhere in talking with the contractors and decorators it was assumed he would be living there and he was washed along with the tide. Everything was apples he’d told his father.

He hadn’t told his father about the threatened paternity suit that Cara had suggested unless he agreed to her terms. He was trapped like a fish in a net with nowhere to go. He’d agreed to meet with Cara again at the end of the week. He would know then just how much it was going to cost him for his folly on the yacht. Kim received a generous allowance from his father and promised percentage of proceeds from the store when it opened. He knew his father would eventually stop the allowance once he saw he could make it on what the store produced.

Kim sat down on the edge of the bed…Cara a good Catholic girl who never would have thought of birth control. She was a good looking woman, he reflected but the last thing he needed right now…and the baby he’d hardly looked at it…he hadn’t wanted to look at it…Kimberly…she’d named it after him…he wondered why if Cara so obviously hated him…nah…it would never work…nah besides he hardly knew her.
